Clear, calm, frosty.  It''s turning out to be a proper traditional autumn, we've had the wind and rain, now for the frost and fog.

A very cold and frosty start to this morning and there is so much frost around just now that you would almost have thought that it had been snowing, so you could say that this is the perfect winter morning except that we are technically, not yet into the actual winter.

That then took us into a sunny start to the day although more in the way of high cloud is now moving in from the west.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -5.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and -4.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with Edinburgh Airport getting down to -7°C. This makes last night our coldest night of this autumn so far and even during last winter, it never really got very much colder than that at any time.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was around -4°C here in Edinburgh.

EDIT:

A very shallow layer of freezing fog has now moved in as I write, and it would be a real shame if we didn't get this sort of weather during the actual winter itself.

I am pleased to have observed an actual frost here at the coastal edge of Folkestone when temps eventually reached a min of 0.1 c at 6.30 am. Even the water droplets on the wheelie bin froze over.

Now quite sunny with temps responding in kind at 8.4 c currently.

Here in North Northumberland the temp bottomed out at -4.7 C, last time we had those sort of temps in November was 2016, which was followed by a mild winter! At midday it is still struggling to get above freezing with a lot of high cloud.

Today has been a fairly bright day with the Sun doing its best to be seen through all of the high cloud which there is, but nothing in the way of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 1pm this afternoon.

As a result of that, there is still some frost around in shaded areas in particular. The temperatures have been really struggling just to get above freezing and so, the temperature even at 1pm this afternoon was still at only around 1°C here in Edinburgh.
