Conclusion:

Overall, September was a very boring and uneventful month with the only real highlight being a brief spell of summer-like weather at the beginning of the second half of the month.

It was a slightly warmer than month overall, but without any significant deviation from the long term averages and if I had gone by the much overall 1961-1990 average here, September might even have come out as slightly colder than average overall.

Unlike in many other parts of the UK, September wasn't as wet here as any of the summer months which preceded it. Indeed, the number of official rain days during September was only very slightly above average overall. However, it was still a wetter than average month overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts which means that we still haven't had a drier than average month here since April.

In fact, the only reason why this month wasn't as wet as other recent months has been due to the more southerly displacement of the jet stream at times, which has recently resulted in us virtually missing out altogether on quite a major rain event which hit England and Wales, and caused quite a few flooding and other issues down there (a huge difference from what it was like not too long ago when a lot of people were worried about possible water shortages due to a prolonged lack of rainfall).

The fact that the number of official rain days has been not much more than average means that it hasn't really rained much more often than normal during September. However, we have had some quite big downpours at times which have produced some fairly large totals, and that is why it's been wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

For so much of this month, it had looked virtually certain that this month would be significantly sunnier than average. However, the last week or so has been much duller, and this was enough in the end to result in this month being slightly duller than average overall. However, I can report that once the data for botanic gardens has been reported on here, this will show September to be a bit sunnier than average which means that the sunshine totals across Edinburgh as a whole, can really be considered as being around average overall.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
