An exceptionally rare SSW event is occuring in the southern hemisphere right now. Its possibly the 2nd SSW ever recorded. My understanding is disruption of the stratosphere in the NHem has alot to do with the continents and the oceans having a longitude dependency. Over the south pole its either all ocean or all land which makes it more difficult for this kind of disruption to occur.
