A fairly stonking 117.8mm now recorded at Winchester, but even that is understated as the station was offline through some prolonged downpours on Friday. Well over 100mm recorded from the 22nd to date (8 days) - very unusual down here - more to come this afternoon as well.

Depending on the system it may well have counted the rain anyway, the stored data is independent of uploading files which can be done at any time.

Not too sure re the missed element - there was certainly a small 'step' in the rainfall data when it came back up - but the total daily figure of 2.3mm seems significantly lower than I would have expected, based on my (admittedly subjective) personal experience of the day. And, of course, I don't live at the weather station (it's about 3 miles away).

In any case, September will end as an unusually wet month down here, barely credible given where we were before the 22nd.

In the end, a total of 1.4 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during yesterday along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that though, a total of 0.8 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 10pm tonight along with 2.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Despite the fact that we are now less than two hours away from the end of this month, these totals for today and this month are still not likely to be the final totals because it is still raining here in Edinburgh as I write.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 82.4 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 82.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 639.8 mm as at 10pm tonight.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 79.0 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 79.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 616.0 mm as at 10pm tonight.

That means that this month will now go down as being wetter than average at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in terms of the number of official rain days regardless of what happens between now and midnight as there has now been more official rain days there during this month than the 1981-2010 September average for that station.

Now that we have just entered another new month, I can now confirm that the final total for September comes out as 82.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 79.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 142.1% of the 1981-2010 average for that station whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 124.6% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during September.

Overall, this shows that September was substantially wetter than average at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, but not as wet in that regard as what it was in August.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 13 official rain days during September and this shows that it was wetter than average there overall in terms of the number of official rain days since that amounts to 125.0% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 11 official rain days during September with that amounting to 107.4% of the 1981-2010 average, thus making September a slightly wetter than average month there overall in terms of the number of official rain days.

Meanwhile, I can also confirm that the total for this autumn so far as at midnight going into 1 October 2019 was 82.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 79.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that is 38.2% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 39.4% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during this autumn so far as at midnight going into 1 October 2019.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 13 official rain days during this autumn so far as at midnight going into 1 October 2019 which is 35.9% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 11 official rain days during this autumn so far as at that same stated time which is 32.5% of the 1981-2010 average.

Finally, I can also confirm that during 2019 so far, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had a total of 640.0 mm of rain as at midnight going into 1 October 2019 which is 84.4% of the 1981-2010 average, whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had a total of 616.4 mm of rain during 2019 so far as at midnight going into 1 October 2019, which is 87.5% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 99 official rain days so far during 2019 as at midnight going into 1 October 2019 which is 72.1% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 96 official rain days during 2019 so far at at midnight going into 1 October 2019 which is 77.3% of the 1981-2010 average.

The total for the year to end Sept. is now 356mm, which is 75% of the LTA.

Nowhere near as wet here as in Winchester, which isn't all that far away. Anyway, total rain of 60.3mm, of which 5.4mm fell from 1st-21st and the remaining 54.9mm fell in the last 8 days. 29.5mm of it fell on the 24th, nearly half of the total.

That is an interesting disparity, but the Winchester data is well supported by the figures from Southampton: http://www.southamptonweather.co.uk/wxrainsummary.php, where 138.3mm was recorded for September. The wettest day in Winchester was also the 24th, with 32.5mm. I guess it just reflects the wonderful local quirks of our complex national weather - it will be interesting to see the Met Office rainfall map for the month in due course.

Finished up the wettest September I've recorded with 116.5mm. (235% average).  Remarkably, 93mm fell in just the last 7 days.

Previous wettest was September 2000 with 108mm.

I'm not doubting the Winchester figure, far from it - on many occasions the rain seemed to miss us to the south, or die out before reaching us. I've been working in Southampton a lot recently, and noticing how much wetter it was there than at home.
