I've now been using the new tipping spoon for several days. Unfortunately, the first test period turned into a fiasco when a number of flying ants drowned in my analogue gauge rendering an accurate reading impossible on Sunday. However, the rain total since midday yesterday is virtually identical on both devices. Therefore, I'm satisfied the VP2 is now measuring rainfall relatively accurately and the cause of the problem was a faulty sensor / reed switch.

It's been raining, albeit only lightly, continuously for over 24hs now, and while my nearest official met station, located less than two miles away, recorded about 23mn over the period, my Davis has recorded the grand sum of 3.3mm for the same

I'm a really sick to death of that machine at this stage. The hundreds upon hundreds of euros I have invested in it over the years, and it still never fails to let me down during sizable rain events. Same thing happened back in August too. The wettest day of the month and hardly a drop of rain was recorded. 🤬

Has yours got the new style tipping spoon? I've found it a lot more accurate, although I am convinced there was a fault on my old one because the readings were so far off the mark.

It seems my that my Davis anemometer died a death sometime during the night. Still reporting direction, but no windspeed at this point. In fairness, the anemometer has worked well for the last 15 odd years or so, so it has had a good run. Normally, I'd be scrambling all the pennies I can muster to have replaced with a new one, but those days are gone. If it isn't one thing with the Davis V2, it's another, and it has cost me a bomb to maintain. Just the other day, the hydrometer started playing up by not reporting, or misreporting, humidity values. This is a tried and true sign that the whole thermo sensor is about to die.... yet again. It is just over a year old (was purchased and installed in Summer 2022).

When that inevitably goes completely, that too will not be replaced. It is obvious to me now that Davis sensors cannot tolerate a humid climate for very long. As I said in an earlier post, I am experimenting with another wifi temp sensor in the Davis radiation shield itself and am more than satisfied with the results of it. I just refuse to spend another 80 odd quid for yet another Davis temp/hydro sensor that rarely, if ever, lasts for more than 2 years.

You've really had rotten luck with yours! I installed my VP2 in 2020 and haven't had to touch it since then - aside from cleaning out some gunk from the rain gauge funnel a few times.

With the anemometers, I remember reading ages ago that the reed goes in them.  For the sake of £3, it might be worth a punt:

Edit: says you need some soldering skills, so that'd rule me out! 😆

Thanks for that link, Retron. I'm going to give that a go actually.

My anemometer is roof mounted, so I'll have to get a monkey brother of mine (he never needs a ladder to climb great heights!) to go up there when he has the time sometime in April or May. No way am I going to send him up there at this time of year when the steep roof is slimy with damp and drizzle greese.

I see from looking data from last night that the anemometer randomly reported  windspeeds again just after 5am, only to stop again about 5 minutes later. Something definitely not connecting right alright.
