The rain from earlier on has now cleared away to leave behind, just an odd isolated shower. As that has happened, more in the way of clearer sky has appeared, although this has occurred in the wrong place to allow us to see any late sunshine.
The result of this is that in the end, a total of just 3.6 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank with nothing at all in that department since 12 noon which is very disappointing indeed, after such a promising start to the day. Nevertheless, this was enough to secure this month's status as a sunnier than average month overall as there has now been more sunshine during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1981-2010 June average for that station.
As a result of the rain which we had during the latter part of this afternoon and this evening, a total of 2.6 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9pm tonight.
This means that for the first time since 6 April 2019, today will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations but more importantly, this also brought to an end, the unofficial absolute drought which went on in this part of the world for a total of almost 18 days.
So all in all, it has been a very interesting day where this month's status as a sunnier than average month was clinched, but where an unofficial absolute drought was brought to an end and it's not very often that both of this things happen on the very same day.
Meanwhile, the temperature at 9pm this evening was 9.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
