8C with sunny spells, today may see some worthwhile rain before 11am, and again Saturday but that's about it for this month.

There was some dense fog during the night and even a little bit of drizzle which made everything rather damp for a while. However, that fog has now lifted and it has now become much sunnier.

The result of this is that a total of 1.1 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning and there shouldn't now be anything in the way to prevent us from getting that remaining 54 minutes of sunshine or more during the rest of today which is required for this month to go down as being sunnier than average overall at Edinburgh Gogarbank as was inevitably always going to end up happening in the end.

In addition to that, the rain continues to refuse to fall in this part of the world even though other parts of the UK have been getting heavy showers and thunderstorms over the last 24 hours (yet one more example of how it is usually always elsewhere other than here that gets all of the more interesting weather).

This means that our unofficial absolute drought in this part of the world has now entered its 18th day even though a total of 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8am this morning, thanks to that overnight drizzle and especially since this wasn't enough for anything at all to register at Edinburgh Gogarbank in the way of any actual recorded rainfall.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 7.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, the wind is no longer blowing straight in from off the North Sea and the result of this is that it is a bit warmer just now than what it has been at this time of other recent mornings.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 11.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 11.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Low unbroken cloud but with patchy brightness, brisk SW breeze, a very light shower in the early hours but just enough to dampen the ground and no more.

12*C; 81%RH.

One thing I noticed yesterday was that in the early evening a large area of moderately heavy rain was moving up from the Channel, but once it hit landfall the rain constantly faded out between the coast and here so that we got nothing at all.  Quite remarkable, and rather a disappointment, as I had been (and still am) hoping for rain for the benefit of the garden.

As this morning has gone on, more in the way of cloud has built up although there are still some fairly decent sunny spells getting through at times.

The result of this is that a total of 3.8 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon. This now means that there has been more sunshine during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1981-2010 April average for that particular station where this month will therefore go down as being sunnier than average overall as a result, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

However, the wind had started to come in more from off the North Sea once again and as a result of that, the temperature over the last couple of hours have been refusing to rise any further than what they have done already, so the temperature at 12 noon remains stuck at around the 13°C mark.

After a dull & damp morning with 4.6 mm of rain so far today, it is slowly brightening up as the high cloud gradually peel away to the east. However, the current 12.7 c & 84% h are feeling cool & fresh in the brisk southerly wind.

We don't have any thunder in this part of the world, but I can report that at long, long last we finally have some rain here which is something which we haven't had for a very long time now.

In fact, it has generally been cloudy for most of this afternoon with only the odd very brief glimpse of the Sun earlier on and the result of this is that a total of just 3.6 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh as at 5pm this evening, but with nothing at all in that department since 12 noon.

It took a long time for the rain to arrive which means that for most of this afternoon, we were really just in our usual borefest with yet more constant grey skies and just one massive dull and overcast nothingness. Because of this, it is too early just now for any actual rainfall to have been recorded from that at any of my three local stations. However, the rain has got much heavier over the last wee while which means that this should at least, be enough to end the unofficial absolute drought here once and for all.

However, the temperatures during today have generally been refusing to rise but today's maximum temperature was 14.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh so it was at least slightly warmer than yesterday though still a lot cooler than what it was just a few days ago.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 10.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Yet another vile evening. Nothing of interest to report such as heavy rain or convection just a repulsive drizzle off the North Sea accompanied by the usual filth and murk. 2.6mm has fallen thus far and temperature down to a dire 8.6C having reached 14.4C earlier in sunshine when I was stuck at work

Just the absolute pits. Not a single decent evening/sunset all month at least following a working day

The rain from earlier on has now cleared away to leave behind, just an odd isolated shower. As that has happened, more in the way of clearer sky has appeared, although this has occurred in the wrong place to allow us to see any late sunshine.

The result of this is that in the end, a total of just 3.6 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank with nothing at all in that department since 12 noon which is very disappointing indeed, after such a promising start to the day. Nevertheless, this was enough to secure this month's status as a sunnier than average month overall as there has now been more sunshine during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1981-2010 June average for that station.

As a result of the rain which we had during the latter part of this afternoon and this evening, a total of 2.6 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9pm tonight.

This means that for the first time since 6 April 2019, today will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations but more importantly, this also brought to an end, the unofficial absolute drought which went on in this part of the world for a total of almost 18 days.

So all in all, it has been a very interesting day where this month's status as a sunnier than average month was clinched, but where an unofficial absolute drought was brought to an end and it's not very often that both of this things happen on the very same day.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9pm this evening was 9.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
