Yes, I agree, conditions have been pretty poor in France, with rock-hard pistes causing lots of injuries. I was looking at the Chatel forecast page though and they are optimistic of a decent dump over the next couple of days. No skiing for me this winter anyway so I will try not to torment myself looking at the snow forecasts!

I am going to Courmayer on the 16th February and seriously worried. They are expecting 4 inches this week in western Alps otherwise daffodil picking would be a serious option.

Looking at the charts my guess is no major snow storms heading in that direction over the next `10 days. My guess is that it will be snowy during my week so again not much in the way of skiing but it would be fun driving.

For the first year ever (for the last 15 years or so) I have not yet put on my winter tyres and frankly am not getting the urge to do so either.

Great thread Colin. I've seen some vide clips of 10 feet plus of snow in a single fall and they've had at least 3 of those.

Not surprisingly avalanche warnings are in place - They've had mega falls.

You can get an idea of the depth of that quite easily. That's over 10 feet of snow.

Amazing. I went there two years ago when they were in the grips of a freezing cold spell . Highs of -5c  and a foot of snow even in Salzburg and temps as low as -20c.   However this week is off the scale in terms of snowfall especially above 650m.  Saalbach is at 1000m so comfortably above the snow line at the moment.

15/16 Feb 1929 120cm in 15 hrs at Dean Prior on eastern edge of Dartmoor is reckoned the lowland record for GB

There's no particular reason it can't happen here, except that the areas in Europe worst affected are quite high up so will tend to get heavier precipitation of whatever kind.
Most of the UK can be comfortably cold enough for substantial snow to fall for many hours if conditions conspire.
