I use one of those electronic cat scarers which is great but there is one spot under Mrs N's car that is now a covered dumping ground. A place the beam cannot reach. Will have to try ammonia again in shallow containers where she parks the car.

Back on topic. Rain. My rain gauge has recorded 76mm in the past 24 hours. That's near enough 3ins in imperial. Not expecting that and the deluge an hour or so ago was almost tropical in nature.

In the end, a total of 1.0 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning with the botanic gardens in Edinburgh remaining completely dry so far as of that same time.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 3.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 41.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 3.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 5.6 mm, the total for this winter so far to 39.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 5.6 mm as at 8am this morning.

With just over two thirds of this month gone, this is clearly going to go down as yet another substantially dry month at both of those stations both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts and the number of official rain days.

In fact, there has still been far less rainfall during the first two months of this so-called "winter" put together, than the 1981-2010 January average at both of those stations where this month is looking on course to possibly becoming one of the driest January's on record at both of these stations if not, the driest January on record.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

In the end, a total of 0.2 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank but with nothing at all at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that though, a total of 1.0 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 10am this morning along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 5.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 43.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 5.2 mm as at 10am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 6.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 40.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 6.8 mm as at 10am this morning.

With just 5 more days left of this month after today, it is now looking odds on that this month will now go down as one of our driest Januarys on record, if not the driest January on record in this part of the world.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
