In the end, a total of 2.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes yesterday the wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations.

As is per usual for this month though, today has been completely dry so far as at 9am this morning at both of those stations.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 6.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 44.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 6.8 mm as at 9am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 8.8 mm, the total for this winter so far to 42.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 8.8 mm as at 9am this morning.

Since yesterday's rainfall total wasn't all that big and since today is turning out to be every bit as bone dry as I expected it to be, this month continues to be on course to be at the very least, one of our driest Januarys on record, especially since I'm not seeing too much in the way of precipitation coming up here during the last few days of this month despite the slightly more unsettled outlook compared to what we have been used to recently.

Total now at 43 mm, this includes 7 mm from last night's frontal system. Roughly at 67% of the local average at this stage of the month. Rainfall on 17 out of the 27 days so far this month, but modest amounts  - the 24 hr period of the 16th saw 6.4 mm, only topped by last night's 7 mm.

A total of 2.6 mm of rain (some of that fell as sleet during the early hours of this morning) has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 2.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh..

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 9.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 47.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 9.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 11.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 44.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 11.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

This should now be just about enough to prevent this month from going down as our driest January on record and since it is still raining just now as I write, those above totals for today are unlikely to be today's final totals.

However, this month is still going to go down as a substantially drier than average month here both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days.

Looks like I have just about caught up with you (for the time being at least) which I didn't think would actually happen given how dry it's been here recently.

A total of 3.4 mm of rain has now fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 3pm this afternoon along with 3.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That now makes today, the wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 10.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 48.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 10.2 mm as at 3pm this afternoon.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 12.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 45.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 12.0 mm as at 3pm this afternoon.

It's still been a substantially drier than average month here though. However, it would have been quite astonishing if we had failed to get more than 10 mm of rain during this month at any of my three local stations and we have at least, now prevented that possible scenario from happening.

Thawed the manual gauges out (electronic one useless in wintry weather) and we've had 9 mm today - the largest amount in one day so far this month. Total now at 52 mm.

Now that we have just entered another new month, I can now confirm that the final total for January comes out as 10.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 12.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 13.4% of the 1981-2010 average for that station whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 18.1% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during January.

Overall, this shows that January was a substantially drier than average month at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. It was possibly the driest January at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh since 1953, and almost certainly the driest January on record at Edinburgh Gogarbank in terms of that being a station record, as that is very much a relatively new station which hasn't even been around for anything like as long as other stations such as the one at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 4 official rain days during January and this shows that it was a substantially drier than average month there in terms of the number of official rain days since that amounts to 29.4% of the 1981-2010 average. It is a similar story at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which also had 4 official rain days with that amounting to 32.0% of the 1981-2010 average.

I can also confirm that the total for the winter so far is 48.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 46.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at midnight going into 1 February 2019.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 24.8% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 26.2% of its 1981-2010 average during the winter so far as at midnight going into 1 February 2019.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 12 official rain days during this winter so far which is 33.1% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 13 official rain days during this winter so far which is 39.0% of the 1981-2010 average.

I can also confirm that during 2019 so far, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had a total of 10.2 mm of rain as at midnight going into 1 February 2019 which is 1.4% of the 1981-2010 average, whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had a total of 12.2 mm of rain during 2019 so far as at midnight going into 1 February 2019, which is 1.7% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 4 official rain days so far during 2019 as at midnight going into 1 February 2019 which is 2.9% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has also had 4 official rain days during 2019 so far at at midnight going into 1 February 2019 which is 3.2% of the 1981-2010 average.
