The snow appears to have turned back to rain here now, and become much lighter and there is now a thaw taking place of that snow which fell during today. It is also still very overcast though and although the Sun did briefly try to poke through the cloud cover for a short period of time during the latter part of this morning, there was nothing at all, recorded for today in the way of sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank which in complete contrast to yesterday when we had our joint sunniest day of the month and year so far.

Having said that though, it's still not exactly what I would regard as mild, as the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 1.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Absolutely shocking day for January. 9c it's rained all day and apparently ends the cold spell that never arrived this week, this month, this season! ...coldest day in this cold spell reached 7c this week.

Abysmal.

After today's snowfalls which eventually turned to rain, that has all cleared away now, but the weather is still very misty and murky with very poor visibility. What's happened here, is that milder air is coming in, but is coming in over what is still a cold snow-covered surface, and that advection has led to be it being very misty in a similar sort of way to how warm continental air moving over a cold sea surface in summer, results in us getting that characteristic east coast haar in this part of the world.

For the same reason that this causes the east coast to be a lot cooler in summer under those circumstances, this advection of mild air over the cold land surface just now is still causing it to be colder than it otherwise would be and because of that, the temperatures at 7pm tonight were only 0.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 1.0 mm of rain has been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank along 2.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so today has also been yet another official rain day at both stations.
