Gutted when I heard about Philip on the Radio, I didn't even know he was ill although I often wondered why we haven't heard from him for several years.

My favourite weather book is still his 1996 publication 'Weatherwise' superb writing in a easy to read not dumbed down format.

I always respected Philips balanced approach to the GW debate, he was level headed and listened to all sides of the afgument, the exact opposite of the celebrity show offs you often see.

Will be sadly missed.

Andy

Thanks for that Justin. Only the Telegraph seem to have done an obit nothing on BBC site or anywhere else. TWO come up though in a search.

RIP Philip Eden I didn't know he was so ill.

He was passionate about the weather.

From December 27th 2020, zonality will be banned from mixing with the UK. We appreciate that this may come as a shock to younger people and old Uncle Barty. This ban will last for a minimum of ten days.

Very sad news. There was a very good section on radio 5 lives “up all night “ programme this morning, where he used to do a monthly review. Was probably about 15 minutes in total at about 4:15am if you would like to listen on the radio iPlayer or podcast.

Yes, I remember he used to post mainly in the CET topic.

I heard about this yesterday.

Really sad news.

I spoke with Philip a few times via email (and on here of course) many years ago and he was always very kind, patient and encouraging.

A truly lovely man. He will be missed by all of us within the weather community.

RIP.

He was the best. I think the BBC will wait and respect his family wishes and then probably pay their respects and tributes from his colleagues will appear.

Such sad news.

I worked for 2 years alongside Philip after graduating from university in 1984, and he was a big influence in my early career. I was (and am) a weather enthusiast and had many stimulating and informative discussions with him during that time. He was very supportive of me and my other young colleagues.

I have all of the books he wrote, of which my personal favourite is Weatherwise.

His contribution to maintaining rigorous standards in the meteorological world is massive.

RIP Philip.

Not only was he a former TWO member, but also his data on his climate-uk website was originally used for GW's CET competition, instead of the Met Office data, because Simon felt that Philip's data was more accurate. It was only when Philip's updates became less frequent (probably at the start of his illness) that we finally moved to the Met Office numbers, although Simon does calculate his own estimates now for the same reason.

Was sad to read of this. The main reason I found this site was because of withdrawal symptoms from when he stopped updating climate uk which was a fantastic source of info, and his quote about blaming the NAO for Britain's winter weather being like blaming the Radio Times for the quality of TV programmes is a personal favourite of mine. RIP.
