This month's total at Edinburgh Gogarbank now up to 79.8 mm so far as at 4pm, and as a result of a further 0.2 mm being recorded at that station during today as a result of some fine, light drizzle at around lunchtime.

With more rain forecast for tonight as well, it looks as though we are going to above the 80 mm mark there for this month and even as it is, we have already had more rain during this month than what we have had during any other month since last year's wettest June on record.

A total of 1.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, 3.2 mm of rain has fallen during this morning so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 2.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

At Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month so far to 84.6 mm, the total for this winter so far to 137.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 84.6 mm as at 6am this morning.

At the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that now takes the total for this month so far to 71.1 mm, the total for this winter so far to 117.5 mm and the total for this year so far to 71.1 mm as at 6am this morning.

All in all, this has turned out to be quite a wet month in the end, and is of course, already going to go down as our first wetter than average month at both of this stations since last August, thus ending the run of drier than average months which we had since then. Since many other parts of the country have not had that same run of drier than average months though, it comes as no surprise that we have had this outcome in the end. Furthermore, there are still a lot of heavy showers piling in from the west at the moment, so those totals which I have reported above, are unlikely to be the final totals for today, or for this month.

As we have just entered into a new month and got the first month of 2018 out of the way, I can now give the final totals for that month of January. To save space on these threads, I will do this in two separate posts with each one devoted to each of my local stations. In this instance, I will begin with the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where a total of 3.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday.

With that said though, I can now give the current running totals for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh taking a rain day to be one where 1 mm of rain or more has fallen, which are as follows:

Monthly Total For January: 67.5 mm (Expected), 72.7 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days in January: 12.5 (Expected), 17 (Actual)

We had 107.7% of our average January rainfall during that month and 136.0% of our average number of rain days in January, so that month was 7.7% wetter than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, and 36.0% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

2017/18 Winter Total: 128.3 mm (Expected), 119.1 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days during this winter so far: 23.9 (Expected), 26 (Actual)

We have had 67.94% of our average winter rainfall so far and 78.1% of our average number of rain days for this winter so far, so this winter is currently 7.2% drier than average according to the actual rainfall totals, but 8.8% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

2018 Yearly Total: 67.5 mm (Expected), 72.7 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days during this year so far: 12.5 (Expected), 17 (Actual)

We have had 10.3% of our average annual rainfall during 2018 so far, and 7.3% of the average number of rain days for this year so this year is currently 7.7% wetter than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, and 36.0% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

Having got that out of the way, I will now continue with Edinburgh Gogarbank where a total of 5.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday.

With that said though, I can now give the current running totals for Edinburgh Gogarbank taking a rain day to be one where 1 mm of rain or more has fallen, which are as follows:

Monthly Total For January: 76.3 mm (Expected), 86.8 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days in January: 13.6 (Expected), 18 (Actual)

We had 113.8% of our average January rainfall during that month and 132.4% of our average number of rain days in January, so that month was 13.8% wetter than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, and 32.4% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

2017/18 Winter Total: 139.9 mm (Expected), 139.8 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days during this winter so far: 26.8 (Expected), 28 (Actual)

We have had 72.2% of our average winter rainfall so far and 77.1% of our average number of rain days for this winter so far, so this winter is currently 0.1% drier than average according to the actual rainfall totals, but 5.7% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

2018 Yearly Total: 76.3 mm (Expected), 86.8 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days during this year so far: 13.6 (Expected), 18 (Actual)

We have had 11.5% of our average annual rainfall during 2018 so far, and 13.1% of the average number of rain days for this year so this year is currently 13.8% wetter than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, and 32.4% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

Finished the month with 71.5mm here.  Quite a wet month (142% of average), and the 4th wettest January I've recorded over the last 35 years.

Interestingly, the 16th Jan which produced a streamer of heavy evening snow here was the wettest day of the month, at 13mm.

Another stupidly wet month, recording a total of 159.4mm, or 220% of average.

Really hope we get something drier over the next few months. I'm so sick of all of this north-westerly crud battering this area.
