Negative PNA setup across the NW looks like bringing snow and sub zero day time maxes into Alberta from this weekend ...Cold pool moves south in USA northern plains from early next week....Calgary Max on Sunday is -1c.....not bad for late Sept..

I thought Albertan's are use to these extremes? Or is it because it's wetter snow!??

Somewhat OT but on the theme of unexpectedly wetter snow, there is the story of a German architect who, having checked that the maximum snowfall to be expected  in the UK was 15", designed a roof for Caffyns car showroom in Sevenoaks to cope with that. Alas, he was Bavarian, and assumed the snow would be dry. Come 26th April 1950 (yes, April) and there was a 15" fall of wet snow, the roof fell in, and the showroom was wrecked!

The first big snowstorm almost always causes chaos especially when it comes early even in areas and countries used to snowy winters. Canadians are no exception to this. Once the authorities get their act together and drivers get their winter tyres / snow chains on things improveo.

Browning Montana has had huge amounts of snow - Now over 5 feet. Amazing when you think this place is 48.55 degrees latitude. It's much further south than the UK.

What did help deliver the snow is that the place is 4,330 feet above sea level.

But to get huge amounts of snow at the end of September must be close to or a record.

Over half a meter of snow had fallen by sunday night. Crazy that Sept average is around 20C and October 14C.

Up to 1 metre could fall apparently in the far south of Alberta.

Ben Nevis summit is 4412- but exposed to more humid Atlantic air and not dry continental air near the surface.

Browning has a September low record temperature of -18°C as far as I can tell. Notwithstanding, the snow depths are well in excess of usual September figures.

Denver set to break greatest two-day swing in temps for October

https://www.denverpost.com/2019/10/08/denver-weather-temperature-drop-snow/

60F/33C drop in two days (other months have had bigger swings)

I saw that and thought it was amazingly freakishly erratic!! If only we had something 'exciting & eventful' like the N. America does?

What's the main reason? I know Denver itself is 1 mile high ...!? But... a 33c drop in temperature in one day is quite significant?

Also with accuweather forecasting snowfall early hours of tomorrow and accumulating up to 10cms? - Surely this must be incorrect? The ground must be too warm for any snow to settle??? Doesn't make sense?

28c with sun today 09/10/19

-3c with snow tomorrow?

Surely the ground surface temps would be too hot for any snow to settle? No??? What do you think?

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/denver/80203/current-weather/347810

PS - It will be back up in 60's and maybe 70's in Denver (20 or so degrees!) by the weekend?

This was the photo I was looking for - was taken early to mid November 2003 from the Denver museum of nature and science centre looking westwards over the Denver skyline. As you can see the Rockies and apparently that day many ski resorts like Aspen, Vail, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge etc etc received up to 6" of fresh powdery snow when in Denver it was still 20c with as you can see and dry sunny weather!). Then two days later the snow had arrived in Denver as I left, so I missed it! But I drove to Rockies though with others and it was like a winter wonderland! Couldn't have been more different than Denver even if it tried! The weather in Denver is similar to Billings Montana and Calgary  Alberta. Some times the Rockies can swallow up all the snow and the fronts weaken as they reach Denver. - All fascinating stuff.

Pic taken one morning mid November (ish) 2003 looking westwards across the Rockies showing Denver skyline from Denver Museum of nature and science: - a few hours later those hills and mountains in distance were white but Denver remained bone dry but there was a rapid drop in temperature I remember!!

I remember being on the shore of Lake Louise in May - with the temp -5c, thick snow on the ground, the lake almost totally frozen, and light snow falling. It is over 5,000ft asl, though.

Wasn't quite this wintry, but this gives you an idea:

Good God, that is what you call a proper continental climate! Denver goes from a high of 26°C and sunshine today, to a high of -3°C with snow tomorrow. Temperatures tomorrow night then fall to -13°C, before rising back up to 20°C by weekend!

EDIT: Sorry didn't realise it had been posted further up the page!

Meanwhile on the East Coast

Regardless of how it’s classified, this prolonged storm will be a serious weather-maker for southern New England. Widespread 1” – 3” rains can be expected, and totals could exceed 5” in far eastern Massachusetts, including Boston and Cape Cod. Wind gusts could reach 30 mph in Philadelphia and New York and 50 mph in Boston. Coastal flooding from the extended onshore flow will be exacerbated by high astronomical tides associated with Saturday’s full moon. Moderate flooding at high tide could extend from North Carolina to New York.

Spoke to my project team in Denver at 4pm UK/ 9am Mountain time today and it was snowing and settling but melting quite quickly. Obviously heavy enough precipitation to settle even with the warm ground temps. Temps were around -2c at that time. The team in Austin and Bangalore were not jealous!
