high of -25c and a few days later up to +5c! I mean that's rise of 30 degrees over a few days? CRAZY!

Anyway this is a hypothetical scenario as the UK will never see such extreme cold, but JUST - Imagine the UK experiencing daytime maxes of +2c and then it shoots up to +32c a few days later?

But so exciting and eventful unlike the relentless borefest of overcast, mild, dank, gloomy, miserable, drizzly depressive, gunk we get in the UK!

Just looking at the weather there in Chicago now:

I doubt many people in Chicago are excited about it being so cold they’re told not to breathe too deeply or talk outside. They can keep it. Ain’t nothing nice about such cold temperatures.

If it happened here so many pipes would burst, the water supply would be in chaos for weeks.

I wouldn't want to see those temperatures here, I remember all to well 63 and what those temperatures did to the bird population. I've never forgot the sad sights of frozen birds everywhere many still perched in the trees froze solid only to fall when things began to thaw, the arctic can keep those kind of temps.

I note Brian commenting in the MO thread on the contrast in just a week from -15 in N Scotland to +15 in S England.

But Illinois has the prospect of an 80F (45C) rise over 4 days in the same place

Hi Dew!

It is this 'shock' on materials of this deep cold/rapid warm up that must be of concern?

From pipes to pot holes the impacts on mans infrastructure will be interesting to see?

If we are to now expect rapid cycling of our weathers then we should be thinking about the change this brings to our 'human world' and the costs of keeping on top of it all.

The ability for the pole to slough off its cold and see it drop into temperate regions ( where rebound to 'normal temps' can bring a huge range?) is now established so it would be interesting to find how much it costs in infrastructure repairs compared to cost before the turn of the century?

Meanwhile Central Western Canada is experiencing some harsh cold.....Edmonton, Calgary are down to -30c.....this will to some extent spread into Central USA....but not as brutal as last week...

Yes friends in Calgary say they have a wind-chill of -37c yesterday. - Very cold but not unusual for them!

BACK TO NYC - temps during day struggled to get above -10c less than a week ago! Now they are up to +17c . Must be t-shirt and short sleeve weather. Plus they have sun too - albeit brief but better than the utter vile trash we are getting here!

Seems to be quite a nasty bit of weather across some regions hit by the polar plunge.

I suppose if you go from -20f to 50f over a couple of days you should expect as bit of 'weirdness'?

Fog seems to be quite an issue as the warm moist hits the remnants of that brutal cold.

A dusting of snow in NYC - doesn't look that severe or deep compared to their standards:

22 feet of snow this month at the top of Mammoth Mountain, Sierra Nevada, CA - and counting. 15 feet at the resort itself.  Already a record for February.

But this and the associated rain totals down in the lowlands seem to have sorted out California's current drought problem.

Is this from the 'Atmospheric River' they have running into them currently?

From 'atmospheric rivers' to Jet Streams;

Appears they have been seeing some impressive speed over the East of the USA?

A dusting of snow but NYC's snowfall max depth so far this winter has been 5cms which is pretty poor in comparison - give it's one of the most snowiest cities in N. America with Buffalo coming on top as the snowiest city etc:
Just looking at the NYC live webcam - this is expected to turn to rain tonight followed by 12c tomorrow afternoon! - Gosh all the fun weather they are getting and we aren't seeing any 'winter weather excitement' as always!

Well, seeing as our winter is continuing to be a benign, gloomy, mild, overcast, borefest as always i thought i'd follow the mini' winter storm in NE states as it's more interesting:

Looks like it's becoming a sleety mix of rain and snow in DC now and it's still currently snowing in NYC, although this too will become a sleety mix within the next few hours too:

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/northeast-region/weather-radar

Would anyone class this winter storm as a 'nor easter' or not!?

Just doesn't have it's usual accumulation totals of "8-12" to 12-18" and 18 -24" or even up to 36" in it's forecast as it normally would have!? Latest precipitation radar (at 17:45 ET).

If 5-7cms (2-3") of snow is all NYC and DC can do out of this than this is poor for their standards - Even parts of Cornwall got more than that on Thursday 31st January.
