UK Outlook for Monday 11 Dec 2017 to Wednesday 20 Dec 2017:

Monday will see outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow, most likely across central and southern parts at first, clearing to brighter skies and wintry showers. Further accumulations of snow are most likely in central and northern areas. By midweek, we may see another spell of rain, sleet and snow moving east across many parts for a time. Otherwise, a changeable period with bright spells and wintry showers, these most frequent in the north and west. There is a continued risk of snow accumulations for all areas, either from showers or more organised frontal bands moving in from off the Atlantic. Some strong winds at times, especially in the west and northwest. Probably staying cold, with overnight frost and ice, with perhaps less cold interludes possible, especially in the south.

UK Outlook for Thursday 21 Dec 2017 to Thursday 4 Jan 2018:

Slow-moving or blocked weather patterns are likely to dominate for the rest of December and into the early part of January. This is likely to bring a mixture of colder, drier periods and shorter lived milder, wetter and windier interludes. Snow is likely at times, especially in more northern and central parts of the UK. There remains some uncertainty in regards to which pattern will be most dominant during this period. Overall temperatures will probably be below average, but with some milder spells.

Snowy update from the Meto. Looks like they think Monday's snow will be a central and southern affair.

Does nobody edit this stuff before they put it out? The second highlight directly contradicts the first!

"a continued risk of snow accumulations for all areas"

Can't say fairer than that!

Interesting little video has appeared on the BBC site comparing current synoptics to 2010. They are not saying it will be, but saying watch this space.

I might be wrong here, but it looks as though one of the clips in that video might have been filmed near to the top of Easter Road in Edinburgh so if that is the case, that is at least a good reminder that there was actually a time in the past when we once used to get snow here in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I see Carol K has mentioned the word blizzards for N Scotland later. Not a term you see used too often on BBC forecasts. The ingredients are there.

Yes Doc I noticed that and looking at the latest radar output there are plenty showers starting to arrive as per the forecast . I always keep an eye on the live cameras on the traffic Scotland site for the showers starting to turn to snow I find the best one to watch is Tyndrum but its still rain at the moment .

I have also noticed they have a handy live gritter tracking section that shows where the gritters are in your area , a very good site for keeping up to date with whats going on when the weather is bad . A tad windy here at the moment but nothing to bad yet we have lots of shelter here in Fife so dont expect to many showers I am thinking Sunday might be more intresting though with the slider if it dosent head to far South !!

Is it just me or have the issue dates of warnings gone from the met office site. This is really annoying!

I suspect they are in the process of updating the warnings - they seem to have vanished for me.

Yes it's hard to see how old the info is.

Sunday's warning area extends from Oxford northwards to Dumfriesshire.

Between 04:00 Sun 10th and 23:55 Sun 10th

A spell of heavy snow is possible over some central parts of the UK during Sunday. This could lead to road, rail and air travel delays, with the potential for vehicles to become stranded or public transport to be cancelled. Rural communities with limited access routes could become cut off.

A band of rain, heavy at times, is expected to move eastwards over the UK. With cold air in place, a spell of snow looks likely to develop on its northern edge. 1-5 cm is possible quite widely, and up to 10 cm in places. Over higher ground, 20 cm is possible in a few places. There is currently a good deal of uncertainty over the precise track of the areas of rain and snow.

Met office update

UK Outlook for Tuesday 12 Dec 2017 to Thursday 21 Dec 2017:

Tuesday will be cold with bright skies and wintry showers. Further accumulations of snow are most likely in northern areas, and on hills elsewhere. By midweek, we may see another spell of rain, sleet and snow moving east across many parts for a time. The rest of the outlook will probably stay cold with overnight frost and ice, although the south may see a few interludes of less cold conditions. There will be bright spells and wintry showers, these most frequent in the north and west. There is a continued risk of snow accumulations for all areas, either from showers or more organised frontal bands moving in from the Atlantic. Strong winds are likely at times, especially in the west and northwest.

UK Outlook for Friday 22 Dec 2017 to Friday 5 Jan 2018:

High pressure is more likely to dominate for the rest of December and into the early part of January. This is likely to bring a mixture of colder, drier conditions and shorter lived milder, wetter and windier interludes. Snow is likely at times, especially in more northern and central parts of the UK. Temperatures will probably be below average overall, but with some milder spells.

Seems like quite a big shift in the later part of the forecast after lots of rinse-and-repeat. Atlantic ridge slumping onto the UK? Hope it can manage to work its way a bit further north...

Some parts of the northwest could see 5-10cm tomorrow and then be in the firing line for Sunday too.
