16C here, (+1.3C), looks like it will be the first above average month this year.

As a measure of how good a month its been in the SW my mean, 280m up on the moor, is 17.8C. 2006 was 17.9 and August 2003 17C. Somewhat of a cool down likely but its likely to be a warm month overall.

Quick check of how we are doing against that CET forecast a few days ago:

Originally Posted by: TimS

A calculation based on latest GFS 06z output (with a conservative estimate of nigh minima) suggests cumulative CET increasing as follows from today to the 31st:

17th 18.0; 18th 18.1, 19th 18.2, 20th 18.2, 21st 18.3, 22nd 18.5, 23rd 18.6, 24th 18.8, 25th 18.9, 26th 18.9, 27th 18.8, 28th 18.7, 29th 18.7, 30th 18.6, 31st 18.5

Up to the 21st we are at 18.5C per Met Office, 0.2 above what the model showed last week.

Today's GFS 06z output shows this going as follows:

22nd 18.6, 23rd 18.6, 24th 18.6, 25th 18.5, 26th 18.5, 27th 18.5, 28th 18.5, 29th 18.4, 30th 18.4, 31st 18.3

The number doesn't go as high last anticipated last week and that's largely because the real heat stays in the East. The CET is really affected by temperatures in the West of England because 3 of the 4 stations are West of Birmingham.

 Phew - I hadn't thought of it like that - That's a good point.

Not temperature related, but despite the sunny start, I think sunshine will actually end up below-average here. Sunshine to the 23rd at Church Fenton is 182 hours. The LTA is 205.9 hours. The next few days don't look very sunny, and the past few days have been quite cloudy. We'll need some very sunny days between now and the 31st to even reach average.

Rainfall well below average of cours at 9mm. We had 7.9mm yesterday.

Sounds like you've been unlucky. According to Philip Eden sunshine for CET up to 22nd July was at 163%.

To 23rd July my local mean is 19.49°C (+2.74). Mean max 25.95 (+4.25) and mean min 13.026 (+1.23). All values in °C.

So it's looking very impressive in terms of the average maximum temperature, in fact it's a little above that of August 2003

The 24h mean over 2.5°C above average is also a great achievement

The current model output for here suggests a slight drop so a very decent month overall looks the likely result
