Oh dear!  Am I too late for this?  If not could I please go for 9.72c

I looked for it the other day and couldn't find it so I thought we weren't having one this year.  Then there it was.  Stickied right at the top of the page!  Doh!!!

Sorry for the delay but here is the full list of entries for this year. We have 44 in total with a small majority going for slightly above average conditions.

A cool start to the year although there were some very wild swings in temperature during January.

I know I'm going to sound like Brummie Snowman asking this sort of question   but....
When was the last time that all 12 months in a calendar year were below the running mean?

A year under 8c has to be on the cards especially if we get another poor summer. Would be the first since 1879 I think.

8.5 A cold year.

KevBrads1

The meteorological winter is composed of 90 days or 91 days in a leap year from 1st December to 28th February or 29th February

The period 7th January-6th April is a 90 day period and its CET is 2.8C

That would put it colder than winters 1985-86, 1990-91 and 1995-96.

Running Means by Year

This chart shows my running means year by year since 2003. Obviously April 2013's figure will rise considerably but even so, I reckon it will still be below 2010's figure.

2013 stands out in having the mean temperature continue to fall into March. When it comes to the other years, most of them run pretty close together from around May, so really this chart is all about the more unusual years, those being 2006, 2010, 2012 and - so far - 2013. That climb in 2006 was incredible; back in February it was 4th coldest!

So four below average months to start the year all of which have been more than 0.5C below the 1971-2000 mean. Last time that happened was 1986.

Spot the trend then! The big question is when will we see the next above average month. Last one above the 1971-2000 mean was August last year so 9 in a row either at or below the average.

June has started below average due to chilly nights. This may change in the coming days but too early to say if we can break the trend.

At this stage, bar a very warm second half of 2013 (not impossible) it has to be looking tricky for anyone who went above average.
