Last night was an incredibly cold night for this time of the year here in Edinburgh as the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank dropped to 3.7°C with a ground frost even being recorded there which is now our second ground frost of this so-called "summer".

However, this has led to a bright and sunny start to today although a thin layer of cloud has now started to move in from the west.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am BST (07:00 UTC) had recovered to around 13°C here in Edinburgh.

After those ridiculously cold temperatures for this time of the year which we had last night, today actually ended up being the warmest day of this year so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank with a maximum temperature of 21.6°C.

In addition to that, a total of exactly 12.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8pm BST (19:00 UTC) this evening.

However, we are now about to enter the shortest night of the year and just like the thing, there is now quite a lot of cloud around which has built up over the last wee while.

Since tonight will be the shortest night, that will bring us our most spectacular view of the overnight lingering twilight of this entire night if the the weather allows us to be able to see that and so, it would just be like the thing if this cloud cover scuppered that after such a nice day today.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm BST (19:00 UTC) this evening was still up at around 18°C here in Edinburgh.
