Seem every where except the UK miss out the normal Spring heatwave when Spain go to the 40's we usually get high 20's to low 30's here. I think the cold air mass here v the hot air mass further south spawn tornados and rip over NW European places as far as Germany.  Very strange to see this happening in Germany as you see this in the USA Midwest when there cold air north and hot air in the south causes this.

I never thought so. It is Autumn and the land does cool down readily at night. Sydney at that time of the year resembles September in southern England, with some pleasant mellow sunshine.

Note some heavy showers offshore, like that of English Channel in Autumn. There's likely to have been a few lightning flashes in the night.

Hottest May on record in France, smashing the previous record (2011) by an incredible 1.9C

I’ve been in Saône et Loire this week and can testify everything in nature is at least 2 weeks ahead of normal and the fields are already browning.

General range between UK and France is 3C but this time no longer the case and more than 10-15C range so if they got a record broken by 1.9C then here the record of 33C would had been 35C this month.

An article largely about climate change, but it reports that in Delhi this summer, the temp has topped 42c on 25 days so far (highest since the record-breaking 2012), maxing out at 49c in May - an all-time record. On Sunday, the night time temp only fell to 33c.

The heat arrived early, too, with March smashing the record for heat. The prolonged heat is damaging crops, leading to India reneging on a promise to export its surplus wheat to replace the Ukrainian wheat exports lost due to the Russian invasion.

Severe storms hit Cyprus last night and first time it rain at night since I been recording, never rain at nights from late May to September only after lunch time usually.  After 4 days of fires breaking out up north then suddenly the rains came to put out all the fires which is big help.  As if God sent those rain to stop the fires because it never happen to rain at nights in June.  Some reported of hailstorms and lightning.  Nicosia had recent storm that give 41.1mm of rain and 0.2mm 2 days later.  Not yet for last night totals but so far wetter than here which I been reading about low rainfall here.

Specially notable for 40C being reached on an island well away from any land mass source of heat -- next up, the UK?

This week has been Italy’s turn for serious heat as flagged on my previous thread, although it’s starting to fade a little now. Near record temperatures widely.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/06/28/record-heat-europe-italy-rome-scandinavia/

A useful catalogue not only of the Italian records but also the wider heat across Europe.

Next place to watch is Spain. The really hot stuff continues to lurk: it’s retreating into Algeria for a bit before making its way back up into Andalusia next weekend, if (as currently predicted) we get a strong AH ridging over the UK. This morning’s GFS has maxes a week on Monday of 47C in Seville and Cordoba, with some 48s on the hi res.

Alpine glacier collapses in Italy, killing five people

It was not immediately clear what caused the section of ice to break away and rush down the peak’s slope. But the intense heat wave gripping Italy since late June could be a factor, Walter Milan, an Alpine rescue service spokesperson, told RAI state TV.

“The heat is unusual,” Milan said, noting that temperatures in recent days on the peak had topped 10 C (50 F). ”That’s extreme heat” for the peak, Milan said. “Clearly it’s something abnormal.”
