I like the style of the explorations leader (Chris Horsley) and he has been getting some fantastic pics and videos of volcano crater rims that you don't normally get to see

I suspect he is a bit of a nutter though. This week he was trying to collect newly emitted magma from Mount Etna (still hot at 500C on the outside) for analysis in the local geophys lab

Cool!

Where can one see the repeats?

The Times reports extra activity at Vulcano (sic) off N Sicily - a fourfold increase in volume of CO2 and at a higher temp.

Sunbathers are now required to use sunbeds 30cm off the ground for fear of suffocation by a dense layer of CO2 if they just lie on a towel.

Not sure if to post this here or the earthquake thread but as it's magma causing it perhaps best here.

Things are really kicking of in Iceland at the moment with thousands of quake's since yesterday and a 5.4 recently. All centered in the area of the eruption earlier this year.

IMO suggests that it may be a magma vent forming (similar to last year): https://www-vedur-is.translate.goog/um-vi/frettir/jardskjalftahrina-a-reykjanesi?_x_tr_sl=is&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp

Definitely one to watch. Do they still have web cameras in the area?

Looks like Icelandic volcano Grímsvötn is grumbling too. It's status has been changed to yellow today.

This has been off and on since about December last. Hopefully something will kick off but this could well be just one of the many false alarms in the last 7/8 months.

This recent activity is easily the most significant since last year’s eruption and for the first time since then the IMO have listed the chance of an eruption in coming days or weeks as significant. Apparently the magma is around 1km below the surface.

Edit: In the last few minutes the first of the two webcams listed above has panned round to an area of smoke. Not sure if it is anything significant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCa4EMcWuoI

All eyes on. Those cams have picked on on some serious tremors in the last couple of days.

There has been steam visible since yesterday at least, and I think that is what is showing now.

Just trying to gauge where that smoke is arising from and it seems to be north of a natural hot spring and west or northwest of the original volcano. This was an area that did see some very shallow earthquakes about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Interesting times ahead (hopefully)

It's from the activity area from last year. I think it might be residual steam & heat from fagradlsfjall lava field.

Very likely you are right, but it does seem further west than main area of activity last year, but hard to judge from camera alone.

An eruption has now started (relatively close to last year’s)
