Wow, great animation. Always wondered how close to the first eruption this current volcano formed.

Volcano has gone very quiet over the last couple of days. Either it is going to go into rest mode for while or it is just clearing its throat to make way for something bigger.

This steam has sound. The boomy roars of the volcano are unnerving, even from this great distance.

Askja has been inflating since August with current inflation around 7cm.

A potentially significant volcano should it erupt.

I see that the Cumbre Vieja region of La Palma is showing heightened signs of unrest in the last few days with hundreds of small quakes. The status of the volcano has been raised to yellow as it is suggested the quakes are associated with the movement of magma. It may well just be a period of unrest rather than a sign of an upcoming eruption but it is worth watching.

Indeed which one might expand into considerable hyperbole if one was inclined. But you never know...

Seemingly an eruption has now started.

Unfortunately it looks like there are houses in the path of the lava flow.

Yes, I think so. The landscape and quantity of solidified lava suggest it is the ongoing Icelandic eruption. There are a few live streams of the new event in La Palma and it is impressive.

Thanks that was also thinking, the baren landscape kind of giving it away.

The only live stream I've seen is the one i linked above but it isn't that impressive, and of course the need feed linked above.

Lots of talk on social media about the possible Atlantic megatsunami that the scientists say could happen if the island was to split and cause a landslide into the ocean. Very low risk though.

Excellent footage though. Off the top of my head it's the first time I've known one of the Canary volcanoes to erupt. Funnily enough I was thinking of when I visited Teide on Tenerife about 15 years ago earlier on...

As well very impressive fountaining, the lava is moving quite rapidly down the mountainside now and unfortunately there are a significant number of buildings in its path.
