Now that we are into a new month, it is time to start a new thread for recording  the rainfall totals for this month and in a new turn of events, I am also going to allow user to make a prediction here on whether they think that this month will be drier or wetter than average in their own neck of the woods.

The general outlook according to the latest model output is unsettled, and Gavin P. has said in his recent videos that he believes that this could end up being a very wet month. However, rainfall totals can vary quite a lot even down to a fairly local level and even periods which are unsettled in general at a more national level, can still end up being very dry periods in various locations as I discovered just recently here in Edinburgh.

According to the October 1981-2010 averages, October is our wettest month on average due to the fact that this is often seen a rather zonal and westerly type of month with these types of months being rather wet. However, there has been a few recent Octobers which have not been zonal or westerly in any way. Indeed, many recent Octobers have actually been very dry here and that makes the month of October, more difficult to get a wetter than average month from these days, than just about any other month.

Whilst the immediate outlook is unsettled though, there are some hints that we could get some drier weather during the second half of this month in particular, so this month could end up being a month of two halves with a wet first half and a dry second half to it, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was how it actually all ended up.

Furthermore, even most of the upcoming wet weather is expected to be mainly focused on the SE quarter of the UK, although the east of both England and Scotland could also be fairly wet during this period. Of course, Gavin P. could well be right, so this month month could end up being really wet overall. However, I am going to go against that here in Edinburgh and go for a month with average to below average rainfall in this part of the world, which gets off to a fairly wet start.

However this month ends up though, this is the very place to post those all important rainfall predictions and/or data.

4.8mm of rain since midnight, 7.1mm total for the month.

However I see that numerous PWSs in the M27 corridor (Southampton, Fareham etc.) have recorded 40mm-50mm today. I was hoping for considerably more than we've had to water in my new turf.

The lack of rainfall here has been brought to an end by no mistake. We haven't had as much as other parts of the south of England, but for here it has gone from one extreme to another.  Yesterday saw 24.4mm fallling in a 24hour period, which is the wettest day since 10th June 2019 (26.4mm). 9th Feb 2020 came close with 20.3mm, but apart from that, the most rain in a day has been around the 12mm mark, and there haven't been many of those.

Total rainfall for the month to the time of posting (including today's rainfall so far) is 42.9mm, which means that in the first three days of October we've had more rain than in any individual month since March this year.

Ah well, I have been saying that the garden needed it, and at last I can follow Brian's precedent by putting the hosepipe away.

LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at that particular station.

The totals for here during this month so far as nowhere near as high as what they are elsewhere, but it only started to rain here at around breakfast time and given the latest forecasts, the totals for the next 24 hours are likely to be much higher than what they were for the last 24 hours.

Unlike other locations such as Aberdeen, we are not within the current Met Office amber warning areas, so we are unlikely to see the highest rainfall totals out of this really wet spell. Furthermore, the almost constant unsettled signals which were being pointed towards the first half of this month in particular in this part of the world, have been downgraded quite a lot.

The result of this is that once we get the latest wet spell out of the way during the next few days, the outlook beyond that isn't actually all that wet here.

That leaves me still feeling confident that we might end up getting away with a slightly drier than average month here in end as I originally predicted, and it wouldn't surprise me if the vast majority of whatever rainfall we get during the rest of this month, falls within the next day or so.

Yesterday was by far, the wettest day of this autumn so far at both of those stations, and was also the wettest day of this year so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Indeed, there has already been more rain during this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than what was recorded there during the whole of September, and we're only about halfway through the first week of this month.
