LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at that particular station.

Minimum Requirements to be met between 9:00 UTC (10am BST) today and 09:00 UTC (10am BST) on 1 July 2020, and are based on the 1981-2010 average for the current month, season or year as appropriate.

Since there has now been more rain during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1981-2010 June average for that particular station, this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

It is now also starting to look as though this might end up happening at the botanic gardens as well. It is now raining once again as I write, and the latest forecasts have now dropped their previous idea that tomorrow might be mostly dry here (they are now suggesting that the heaviest showers will be here in the east of the country).

We were now into the last day of this month and as you can see above, there is still one remaining station here where this month's rainfall total still hasn't quite reached that particular station's 1981-2010 June average. This shows just how much of a struggle it has been to get more than an average amount of rainfall here during this month at a time when everywhere else has been wetter than average overall (that is shown by the fact that even Edinburgh Gogarbank has been slightly wetter than average during this month).

What it boils down to now is that if an official rain day is recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during the next 24 hours, this month will go down as being wetter than average overall at both of those above stations in terms of the overall rainfall amounts, but it is really touch and go as to whether that will happen or not.

Today's forecast is for no more than the odd shower in these parts which could be enough to get the total at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh to above that 1981-2010 average, but that is unlikely to happen as any showers are likely to be isolated during today. However, there is some rain forecast for here by tomorrow morning and if that arrives quickly enough, that will get the monthly total at the botanic gardens to more than the long term average since the current observation month doesn't actually end until 10am (09:00 UTC) tomorrow morning, which allows for more time for that to be able to happen.

LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at that particular station.

In the end, a torrential downpour during the early part of this morning resulted in there being more rain at the botanic gardens during the official observation month of June than the 1981-2010 June average for that particular station.

Just to show how localised these events can be, none of that rainfall from this morning managed to reach Edinburgh Gogarbank.

However, that wasn't enough to prevent June 2020 from being wetter than average overall in the end at both of those stations, both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days.

This was our first wetter than average month since February 2020, and that came after a very dry spring here. However, June 2020 wasn't as wet here as what it was in other parts of the UK, and also wasn't anywhere near as wet as any of the summer months during last year in this part of the world.

Final total for June here is 63.5mm, very close to our average of 61mm.    Certainly much needed rainfall for the gardens following on from the extraordinarily dry Spring.

Rather late with this report as I have been very busy with other things.

I have been interested to read the other end-of-month reports about how wet it has been at other locations in the country, as we have had another dry month in this West Kent mini-climate. The figures are:

Total for month (average of three local PWSs)  38.1mm which is 84% of the monthly LTA.  There were only three days when there was more than 4mm of rainfall, and then only around 6-7mm.  The rest was in odds and ends.

Total for year to end June (average of two local PWSs because one of them went offline for a couple of months earlier in the year)  359.1mm (113% of LTA for equivalent period).

I went for a walk this morning, and the soil in the fields of growing wheat and barley is absolutely dusty dry.  The soil in the field margins is baked totally hard.  The crops seem to be producing grain, but to my untrained and amateur eye the stalks seem to be shorter than normal - say about two-thirds of the expected height.  The farmer is getting a crop, but it may be a case of only just.

It may seem strange that this is the state of the soil when we have had up to now 113% of LTA for the first six months.  But it was those weeks and weeks of desiccating winds that took away a great deal of soil moisture.  So it goes to show that the simple rainfall figures don't quite give the whole story.

Amazing really, well this is Precipitation Watch but as I type this the forecast rain for today is fizzling out on the radar.

It's truly a case for this part of the South that "the Models" have 'struggled' this summer with predicting rain and thunder. In fact still waiting for the first electrical storm this year here.

A delicious 13 mm since 12 am already at 9 am here at Folkestone, and we're not even halfway through the forecast rain period. Looks like the forecast and much needed 25 mm across Kent for today is on course after all.

It looks like the rain I was hoping in yesterdays forecast that would save the water bill today was there in name only.

'Trace' I think is how you could describe today's offering.

Bright with sun showing and warmish at 21C but that should be in Current Conditions...

I will also add that this is last month's PW thread which a lot of people are still posting into, and that there is another such thread for this month's data.
