Edinburgh: Woken up at 6am by torrential rain outside. It's rained like this for a good hour. At least the strong winds have abated for now.

As Jerry has said above, this morning (and indeed, this week) has got off to a thoroughly wet and miserable start although that rain has now just cleared away to our SE.

That was torrential rain as Jerry said and according to the data from weathercast.co.uk, that produced a total of 8.2 mm of rain in the space of just a single hour between 6am and 7am at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That on its own, has been enough to take this month's total for that particular station to more than the 1981-2010 June average for there which means that regardless of what happens between now and 10am on 1 July when the current official observation month ends, this month will now go down as being wetter than average there both in terms of the official rain days, and in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

The wind has died down as well, although that is only because we have gone into the actual centre of low pressure which appears to situated over central Scotland as write. That is not the sort of synoptic set-up which you want to seeing in the middle of summer if you are after a decent summer and with almost a third of this summer having gone now, this is shaping up to be rather a poor summer here once again.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 11.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 11.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 7am this morning was around 12°C and as I write, it has just brightened up with the Sun now making its first appearance of the day.

This morning's little bit of sunshine means that a total of 36 minutes of sunshine has been recorded fr today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 10am this morning.

Sadly though, that sunshine didn't take long as it didn't take long for those dark clouds to roll in once again and indeed, it is now raining here once again as I write, thus carrying on the story of what is now turning out to a rather increasingly miserable summer up until now.

In addition that, the temperatures are also refusing to rise, and generally remain stuck at around 14°C here in Edinburgh as at 10am this morning, when it was just 13.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

11.6C with drizzle and strong gusty winds. Quite a contrast to this time last Thursday when it was 27C!

The theme of this year seems to be long fine spells followed by awful cool windy spells with a slow recovery in temps.

Here in Edinburgh, it's still raining and to make matters even worse, the wind which had briefly died down earlier on, has now picked up once again with gusts up to 31.1mph from the SW at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

Since 10am this morning (09:00 UTC), a total of 1.4 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon has dropped back to a rather dismal and pathetic 13°C here in Edinburgh (just 12.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank) and now, this so-called "summer" couldn't really go any further down the toilet pan than what it has now down.

Has been bright and fair with sunny breaks and partial cloud as well as staying bone dry, however a blustery W wind is what making the current 16.7 c & 75% h feel cool and fresh. While I can live with that, it does feel and look like we have skipped the next 3 months and gone straight onto October!

This afternoon became slightly brighter for a while as the rain eventually cleared again, but this evening has now degenerated into yet another one of our typical borefests with constant grey skies, and with nothing which is even remotely interesting in terms of our weather actually happening.

The result of this is that the really abysmal total of just 36 minutes of sunshine has been recorded for the whole of today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank, as at 8pm this evening with nothing at all in that department since 10am this morning.

It is also windy with maximum gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank reaching 36.7mph from the WSW.

As at 8pm this evening, a total of 4.8 mm of rain has now fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 10am BST this morning (09:00 UTC) along with 4.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was a very disappointing 14.6°C, and the temperature at 8pm this evening was still at around 14°C here in Edinburgh.
