Conclusion:

This is probably the worst ever winter month which I have ever reported here on TWO in terms of us actually getting any winter weather, just when I had thought that it couldn't get any worse in that regard, than what it was during December.

Overall, it was a substantially warmer than average month both by day and by night, with very little in the way of frost. Indeed, there hasn't been an official air frost at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 10 January 2020. That is a total of 21 days in a row without an air frost and although there has been the odd ground frost during that period, that is just diabolical for what is supposed to be the winter equivalent of high summer, when we should be getting our lowest temperatures of the year as a result.

As far as rainfall is concerned, this was very much an average month overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days. There was just the one day all month when there was any snow falling which as it turns out, is the only day during this entire winter so far, where snow has been falling in this part of the world.

Here in the north of Edinburgh, that produced just a very brief period of sleet and wet snow with that quickly turning back to rain, although this did result in 95cm of lying snow being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank on 25 January 2020.

Finally, it was very much a duller than average month overall and the dullest month of this winter so far, as a result of there being even less sunshine than what there was just December. Overall, it was therefore, a very dismal month as it turned out.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Mild here too but not excessively so, it has been very dry due to rain shadow effect from generally westerly or north westerly flow.
25.4mm is the lowest January total since starting to record digitally in 2007
Only one air frost which is noteworthy, though ground frost and patchy ice occurred several times.
On the 19th air pressure of 1050.8 was recorded again a site record..

Note wind run approaching 8000 miles surprised
(another 176miles recorded since midnight)
