It will be a dry month here with just 20.7mm recorded so far and not much expected the next couple of weeks.

After a soggy December here (141.1 mm; 155% LTA), the opening third of Jan was drier than average with 17.8 mm compared to a LTA of 30.5 mm.

A dramatic change since then, however, with 43.7 mm 12th-15th (and 41.3 mm of that 13th-15th), taking the monthly total to 61.5 mm versus a LTA of 41.5 mm. So a surplus of 20 mm; 148% of the LTA. On a par with December again!

Today has delivered an additional 5 mm as of 3 pm. Judging by radar and forecasts, that total could double before the day's out.

An additional few mm is possible tomorrow, after which it thankfully looks to be dry for at least a week, at least rain-wise (frosts & fog).

Something that's really stood out to me this winter so far is the intensity of the rain. I'm nearing a dozen incidences of rain rates exceeding 10 mm per hour, something I used to record only 2 or 3 times in a whole season (Dec-Feb)!

A total of 4.8 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 9am this morning, along with 5.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 11pm tonight.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this brings the total for this month to 52.0 mm, the total for this winter to 121.6 mm and the total for this year to 52.0 mm as at 11pm tonight.

This means that another 4 or more official rain days now need to occur between now and the end of this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank, in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this brings the total for this month to 42.6 mm, the total for this winter to 91.6 mm and the total for this year to 42.6 mm as at 11pm tonight.

This means that another 4 or more official rain days now need to occur between now and the end of this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days.

Although this month appears to have been fairly wet here until now, high pressure is expected to result in the next week or so from now on, being much drier. This means that there remains a very good chance that this month will still end up being slightly drier than average overall in the end just as I had originally predicted, as I'm not expecting there to be too much in the way of rainfall here in the next couple of weeks as a result.

I was quite surprised to see that 13.8mm of rain fell overnight, with 9.6mm of that falling in one hour! I didn't hear it. That was after 6.6mm yesterday.

So we've had 50.1mm of rain since Monday morning, and the monthly total is 62.4mm. No wonder that the usual flood-prone roads in our area are all closed again.

Relatively speaking I've had a fairly dry month here in East Kent.

Finished at 13.4 mm yesterday, followed by 4.6 mm so far today.

54.7 mm in four days, 59.3 and counting in 5 days (still some showers around).

Monthly-to-date now at 79.5 mm, just under 10 mm short of the whole-Jan LTA.

Good job it now looks dry for at least a week, potentially even a number of days more than that!

Funnily enough, this month could conceivably finish with a below-average total, if for example the 00z GFS run was accurate (huge IF!).

Yesterday's final total was 5.9 mm here.

So, 60.6 mm in 5 days (and 63.0 mm in 6). A considerable rate of rainfall for this locality; no high ground to enhance the rainfall.

Monthly total to date 80.8 mm, 172% of LTA for 17 days of Jan, falling to 162% of LTA for 18 days (today was the first dry one here since 10th and only the 2nd one this month so far).

Only 9 mm off the whole-Jan LTA.

NWP models are now favouring a shutdown of the dry run of weather by 25th, but with high pressure staying close by to the south for at least a couple more days after - so perhaps another run of days dominated by drizzle or light rain. Yuck.

Hints of the polar jet tending southward for the final 2 or 3 days of the month - if that transpires, very unlikely Jan finishes drier than average.

24mm here, we don't look to get much through the final week maybe 10mm - seems unlikely to get anywhere near average 72mm

We are into what's usually the driest four months (here) anyway - quite striking in fact that Feb/Mar/Apr/May all come in around 55mm.
We have a marked peak in July/August, and a higher one in November
