There is quite a significant earthquake swarm currently off the SW of Iceland at the Reykjanes ridge but at this time im not sure whether this one is tectonic or magmatic. Given the location I would say tectonic however there is a very large number of quakes so perhaps not.

White Island volcano in Bay of Plenty NE New Zealand erupted unexpectedly catching tourists unawares - one dead, 20-30 missing. Perhaps not quite unexpected as reports say that the tourist boats that go out there have to suspend operations from time to time.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-50708727

It's an active area - I remember from when I visited NZ a few years back an afternoon at Hot Springs beach, where you can dig a hole in the sand and create you own personal sauna as it fills with water

It has been observed that less snow falls here than any other place of equal extent in the kingdom, occasioned by the shelter of the hills and the warmth of the sea breezes - Alexander Hay, Guide to Chichester, 1805

Confirmed death toll now up to 5, with others still missing.

Reports saying that there were a number of people walking around inside the crater just 'moments' before the eruption.

Also heard that volcanic activity on the island is monitored, but nothing particularly suggested an eruption was imminent.

This is the latest report for that volcano. If I was Brad Scott I would lay low...

"While the activity is contained to the far side of the lake, the current level of activity does not pose a direct hazard to visitors."

Yes - very useful, O-A. Good description of the geology and the safety issues.
