the area is part of a complex fault zone mainly associated with the East Anatolian fault and Lake Hazar just to the east of Sivrice has been created by a spreading of the earth's crust. Last significant earthquake in the area was in 2007.
Istanbul is the one everyone is fearing. Been a long time since a major quake
On a different fault line, the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) - on which the successive quakes have been moving steadily westwards, and, as you say, Istanbul is the next stop. Just hope the present quake doesn't tickle up the NAF.

Surprising for this magnitude, even though it was a sideslip on the fault
Reports just come in of a richter scale 6.0 earthquake on Crete in the Eastern Meditarranean.
Just wondering what part of the island has this affected - quite a nasty jolt and capable of causing quite a bit of damage and maybe some deaths as well ?

There has just been a magnitude 5.6 (IMO reported magnitude) quake in SW Iceland (about 25km S of Reykjavik). It is in an area that has been quite active this year and has several interlinked volcanic systems. At present I don’t know if it is tectonic or magmatic.
USGS have revised it to magnitude 5.5.
No current sign of any eruption.

My brother is in Turkey and posted on our Whatsapp group that he’d just had an Earthquake and they’re still getting after shocks.
I stayed in a great hotel near Ozdere 9 years ago, which is south of Izmir and overlooking the bay where the epicentre was. I suspect it could have serious damage.
It's also very close to Ephesus, hope that's not badly affected.

A few years ago we had a Natural History week on the island of Samos, which has also been affected by this earthquake. Their vital tourist economy will already have been upskittled by Covid-19 and they are a frequent landing place for migrants too. A 'quake could be a serious matter for them and there are low lying settlements near low beaches that would be vulnerable to a tsunami-like sea surge.
