Reading offline.

The sun is as high now as at the end of March. However, lower ozone at this time of year means a run of 5s is up for grabs in these conditions- but is very unusual. The next few days offer plenty of opportunities for this and it could well be a memorable UV spell for the time of year.

Chilton looking OT for another 5+ but Camborne has clouded over. Reading has shut up shop once again.

Sympathies Doc if you like the sun; but, no gloating here as I'm miles from Chilton, but 5.7 at September's mid point is a figure to be viewed with respect. It is roasting out there in direct sunlight, despite only showing 23 on the therm.

I don't have any UV readings to refer to sadly, but I've been impressed by the intensity of the sun here this weekend. Any bare skin exposed to the sun has actually started to feel a bit overheated after 15 mins or so.

A combination of deeply clear skies, very light, often absent winds and peak temps in the 20s have served to lend mid-September a mid-May feel. I welcome that with open arms; I believe that a change to autumnal weather is best saved until at least mid-October .

It's been such a long, sunny summer (no surprise to see it extending into autumn) that I've had to buy a second bottle of sun cream. I've never had to do that before! And yes, the sun was searing for a couple of hours on Saturday near Reading, it would have been around the 5 mark and would have led to burns within half an hour had I not been wearing suncream.

The "max 2"s can't come soon enough for me.

Chilton 4.3 yesterday

Reading 4.0

Camborne only 2.0

We've had an amazing sunshine September so far. At Chilton (due to Reading's break):

UV 6+ on 3 days

UV 5+ on 10 days

UV 4+ on 18 days (so up to yesterday, only 3 days had <4). Quite something.

Chilton seems more reliable than Reading ATM.

Also, the air seems less polluted- at 123m and relatively rural in S Oxfordshire, it's a truer reflection of UV potential in S England.

So a shift, but with regular comparisons in other sites, including Camborne.

The last week at Chilton (since last report):

4.0  4.2  4.0  3.9  4.1  3.6  3.8

Despite all the wet weather, late September is delivering nicely.

Nothing to report now except a look back at September and Inverness recorded 4.1 on 17th. Amazing how it slips back so quickly after the end of September.

Last full post.

Will try to keep the thread alive over the winter.

Since 20th, range between 1.5 and 2.2, with the last 2.0 yesterday at Chilton.

Amazing how quickly it drops during October. However, if O3 is still lower than in February, we should still potentially be able to get a 2+ in the first week of November.

Edit: just checked Chilton's records back to 1990 (so 30 years). Never reached 2 in November!

Lerwick recorded 8 readings of 6 and above this summer, all post-solstice,  the highest being 6.7 3 times! Good reminder of how small UK is globally.
