After more heavy rain today the month`s total is (at the moment) 148.2mm

So I`ll have to put the total at approximately 170mm for the month.

As an aside, my son on his way home from work in Manchester had to divert via the peak district on a longish detour, as the Stockport - Macclesfield road was closed by flooding. My other son, a train driver went to work at 5pm but found the railway track was flooded so he had to come home without even starting work!

It's not really felt like a wetter than average month though, maybe because apart from the odd day there seems to have been plenty of sunshine too.

Severe flood warning in place for the River Goyt at Whaley Bridge.

The dam is damaged at Toddbrook Reservoir and there are genuine concerns it could fail. If so there could be extremely severe damage - everything crossed it manages to hold.

The town is being evacuated.

Final total for July here is 78mm (148% average).   Was close to average rainfall up to the 30th before the thundery downpours of the 31st.

40 years ago we lived in Cheadle Hulme and I was astonished to see photos of nearby Poynton under feet of water (it's on the Cheshire Plain, for heaven's sake, how did the water pile up so much?) and a clip on the BBC news showing the  NT gardens at Lyme Park being washed away (one of our favourite excursions beck then; Whaley Bridge is the nearest town)
