They do, looks like it's quite out of date.

Brogdale's removal from the network seems to have crept under the radar, in that case. It was still an official station in February last year, as it was the coldest spot in the counrtry.

It's a pity we've lost Brogdale and Gravesend, it leaves the coverage of Kent - capable of some of the hottest temperatures in a SSE/SE'ly flow - woefully undercovered.

They also still have Hampton Waterworks on there which was replaced by Teddington Bushy Park, which opened in Feb 2017 according to a Met Office tweet. That map seems very out of date. They don’t seem to care about accuracy these days.

Quite. This is all quite appalling really. Stations that are broken, stations which have been removed and poor coverage in certain areas. I dont have Twitter perhaps someone could direct them to update their Map.

But there’s also a lack of stations in East Anglia, which also makes a difference to the overall picture!  Not good at all is it!  The most discussed subject of this country is the weather and our national weather service seems to fail us dramatically!

Yes I was looking at the Dutch and Belgian data yesterday as they were breaking records and they seem to have almost as many stations in those tiny countries as we do. Much better coverage, and near-live data available online!

Well the Met Office have now decided that Brogdale is one of their sites. You couldn’t make it up!

They now say that the Bedford site was deliberately “blocked” because of concerns over the data?

All fun and games!

I suspect there are actually two "tiers" of stations:

  • Met Office owned and operated stations

  • "Franchised" stations - Met Office approved (i.e. they have to meet all the rules and regulations) but maintained and operated by third parties.

Brogdale would be one of the latter.

I was thinking that , often the person in control of the Twitter feed doesn't seem to have all the facts to hand I've found.

I assumed that all airports would be included in the list of MetO stations, but it seems Heathrow is the exception! No Gatwick, Stansted or Luton on that map, nor Lulsgate (Bristol), Southampton, etc.

I'm thinking some of these will also be franchised stations.

Looks like the Scottish minimum temp record went last night 20.9c in Achnagart.

Which also contradicts the Met Office statement on Twitter that no records were set last night. Amateur hour...

So to sum up. No one has any idea what's going on, or if there is any chance of the 38.1C record increasing.

Great.

Right, I'm off down there now to take some photos of the site. It's in their experimental plant growth area so could be anything from bare soil to poly-tunnels.

Back home in Suffolk to an unbelievably stuffy house with all the windows closed. Top temp with my Vue yesterday was 37.6C. People were driving their cars stating it was 39C around here yesterday, so I'm quite happy with MBY temp.
