True, as is the case with Edinburgh (although you wouldn't think so, going by the sort of weather which we've had during the last month especially when that is seen in comparison with what the rest of the UK has been experiencing over that time as is seen from the fact that we were actually wetter than average during last month at a time when the rest of the UK was still generally drier than average overall).

Anyway, I'm wondering is perhaps, Ally was stating what the weather in Aberdeen would appear to generally be like from the point of view of a certain other poster from your city with the name of Richard, rather than expressing his own particular view about that.

As I type this, it Is raining (albeit lightly at the moment) and we really could do with the wet stuff, but what I find depressing is how it is that dim and grey that I'm having to turn lights on indoors to lift the gloom - at noon time in early June. A contrast to the past few days.

During nearly every single winter, those of us who are looking for a lot of cold weather and snow at that time of the year will the be relying on there being quite a bit of northern blocking around to deliver that with a strong Greenland/Scandinavian High feeding in really cold winds from either Siberia (if that is an easterly wind) or the Arctic (if that is a northerly wind).

Yet all too often, it is the Azores High which then becomes our unwelcome visitor at that time of the year as that then brings in really mild air from the Canary Islands which has then ruined many recent winters in particular. Now that we are into what is supposed to be "summer" though, this now brings us into the very time of the year when we want the Azores High to be around so that it then builds toward the UK and delivers some proper summer weather with a lot of hot, dry and sunny weather.

Indeed, we even got our wish from that last year and we ended up with a really good summer as a result. However, that is once again being shown to be an exception rather than the rule because just when we want the Azores High to be around, it is now posted almost completely missing.

What we have instead of that, is the very type of northern blocking which we look for during the winter to deliver some really cold weather except that at this time of year, this tends to result of low pressure forming underneath it and then sitting in a certain particular location such as right over the UK, resulting in us then experiencing a really poor summer such as what we had in 2007 and 2012, and which has also caused this so-called "summer" to get off to such a poor start.

When you all of that together, you couldn't really make that up. Two questions then arise from that and the first such question is the one of where that Azores High is at the very time of the year when we need it to be around and secondly, why can't we get that sort of northern blocking during the winter which is around at the moment (if we did, our winters would no doubt be colder than what they are turning out to be with those snow and cold weather lovers being much happier as a result)?

It's been very feast or famine here since April. We've had a couple of lovely spells and some crap ones, but mostly it's been that archetypal British weather: changeable (from day to day in recent weeks)

Even took the weather with us on holiday! We were moving around a bit day by day admittedly, but had 5 nice days, 3 crap ones, and one scorchio.

Other than yesterday's rain which didn't arrive until the afternoon it's been very pleasant with plenty of warm sunshine......of course it is only 4 days old

Another perfect evening here: strong sunshine, low humidity and 19C with the right amount of wind.

This week has been very dry and very useable and tomorrow is more the exception to this rule.

Just showery here tomorrow, but Saturday looks a total wash-out.

I had thought about starting this month's convective thread for that type of post at the same time as when I started a various number of other threads such as the Precipitation Watch and of course, this thread.

However, I am also aware that the last time that I did this, it was completely forgotten about with a different thread being used instead for that which was started by another member some time later on. It is for that reason that I have decided not to start this month's convective thread on this occasion but if anyone else wishes to do that, they are very welcome to do so.

I have to agree that this summer is certainly not looking like another 2018. On the other hand I doubt it will be a complete wash-out. My recommendation would be to make the most of any warm, sunny weather we get!

I don't share your pain, Moomin. I will get a lot of pleasure from whatever the weather brings. Years spent working in very different bio-zones made me value what we get in the UK. Try driving through the Sahel with all your car windows up because it is hotter outside!  Or worrying about crotch-rot in a rain forest.    By all means let off steam, but then reflect on how lucky we are really and how interesting our weather can be!

I think TBH what pains me is that Northern Blocking in summer that we would all long for in winter nearly ALWAYS verifies perfectly, whereas in winter it's nearly ALWAYS phantom blocking. Why is this?
