I took the hour and 15 minute drive towards Mid Kent today (Goudhurst, Bewl Water area) near the sweet spot and I was flabergasted !

12cm of powder snow that is completely dry and fluffy. Still hanging thickly in the trees.

Remarkable.

7cm lying this morning and more showers throughout the day including recently ❄🌨

Nice to be able to go out for a walk round the park and woods at lunchtime in a winter wonderland ☃ Such a contrast to the recent dross which seemed to go on for an eternity.

Light snow is now falling here in the north of Edinburgh as I write.

Temperature is currently around -4°C at Edinburgh Airport and -5.09°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, so that should lead to a fairly powdery covering as well.

The snow is now getting a bit heavier here, and has started to settle.

In addition to that, the Met Office have also brought out a new amber warning for that, although we remain just outside that here in Edinburgh and still in the yellow warning zone.

The snow isn't really amounting to all that much here.

The depth is probably no more than about 1cm (it is probably less than that) here and what is falling has become very patchy, often to the point of stopping altogether.

When it's just rain which is falling, it is common for a lot of rain to fall just to west of us but with very little of that reaching us here in Edinburgh. Now, a similar thing appears to be happening just now, but with everything falling as snow, rather than rain (which is probably why the amber warning is further west from here).

In addition to that, the temperatures have also jumped up a bit to -1°C at Edinburgh Airport, and above freezing at Edinburgh Gogarbank (+0.4°C) and Swanston (+1.2°C).😡

Indeed, the snow is forecast to turn back to rain at lower levels so when you add those two things together, my horrible feeling from a few days ago about seeing rain with temperatures up to around +4°C is looking likely to come true later on.

The radar map is showing the snow as turning increasingly to rain/sleet and I have a hunch that this might be what is actually happening, rather than the snow actually stopping.

It's just harder to see that this early in the morning when it's still dark as the street lighting isn't as bright these days as it used to be, especially when we used to have the old sodium lamps which gave out a yellowish colour that started off red or slightly pinkish as these lamps were first turned on.

That hunch is backed up by the fact that the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has now risen to 1.8°C, so it looks as though a slow thaw has started as well. If that is the case, it won't be long before all of that lovely white stuff will have disappeared from here altogether.

EDIT

The temperature at Edinburgh Airport has now jumped up from -1°C to +1°C, so all of the stations in Edinburgh are now above freezing

As John has reported an unusual event has happened here. The temperature even here has risen from -6 C at 4.30 am to +2 C at 6.30 am. A rise of 8 C in 2 hours! Wet snow has soon turned to icy rain and it must be lethal out there (we have been subzero for 4 days).
To the north of the Central Belt it's -6 to -10 C and to the south over the Borders and England & Wales it's -6 to -10 C
I'm sure someone can explain, especially as there's an Amber warning for snow to our west 🤔

Yes and of course (as you will probably know anyway), this has also technically scuppered your possible 4th ice day in a row from yesterday as well because in order for you to have got that ice day, the temperature needed to remain below freezing until after 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning.

That clearly hasn't happened and when you add that to the mix, I'll bet that you are probably very frustrated by that as a result. However, that is just one example of how cruel our weather can be at times.

The band of precipitation actually cleared away to our north for a while with the Sun even managing to come out for a short while. The precipitation now looks as though it has edged back slightly southwards over the last hour or so, but the big problem with that is that it is just light rain which is falling now if anything at all.

There is still a wide band of snow on its northern edge though and some places to the north of the Central Belt have been getting some decent snowfalls out of that, including a number of coastal towns and villages which wouldn't normally do all that well from this sort of event.

In the sweetspot here. No rain yet, all snow, but looking increasingly marginal.  We have in the region of 10 inches or so. The depth is no longer growing due to the new stuff compacting the powdery stuff that fell through the early morning.

Is there snow falling in Wales? Which also seems to be heading in the direction of the Midlands.

The radar seems to show it as snow.
