Today's CET came in at -1.9C after a very cold night last night. Only three days during the Beast from the East last year were colder than that.

My final CET estimate for January is 3.90C.

A tale of two halves:

1-16 Jan 5.26C (+0.70C)

17-31 Jan 2.46C (-2.03C)

My figures are 0.49C below Hadley (as of 30th Hadley is at 4.59C and I was at 4.10C). So a 0.2C fall on the final day of the month.

Overall we are just over 0.5C below the 1981-2010 mean.

Please may I ask that people don't use the term "CET" when referring to their own local temperature record. The acronym stands for Central England Temperature, and even if using it loosely rather than referring to the official series it shouldn't be applied outside that geographical area.

Can we use ART's figure for the CET competition this time, please?

So pretty much every January, bar 2010, this decade has been rather uninteresting CET-wise. Nothing overly cold and nothing overly mild; they've mostly just been 0.5C either side of average.

I don’t think anyone uses the term CET when referring to their own mean temperatures.  I know people have used the term wrongly in the past but GW explains what the CET is on his first post.  Also, when he refers to ‘his CET’ he means his own calculation of the three stations used by Hadley.

Considering that I went for 3.91C, I am now feeling rather pleased with myself :)

I had known for some time that my guess for January was too high but in a way, I am pleased anyway because this means shows that we did at least get some of the cold weather which we were expecting towards the end of the month, albeit not to the extent which a lot of people were hoping for and which the medium term models in particular, kept on pointing towards.

EDIT:

I forgot to add there, well done to col though for getting to within 1°C of the actual recorded value.

Sorry there will be a delay posting the January results. I intended to do this over the weekend but the heavy snow on Friday caused all sorts of problems for me and extra work in clearing snow on Saturday. As a result I am well behind on my normal jobs at the moment.
