It was pretty remakable that even on boxing day as the warm front moved north, it was entirely of snow, even on its back edge. The UK had become so cold it had inherited its own cold pool. Even after the warm front passed temperatures refused to rise above average.

18/11 (-6), 19/11 (-6), 23/11 (-2)

It was an amazing period of weather, a toss up between August 1995 and this for one of my all time favourite.

January 1979 would come close to this - But I have to say that period from November 21st 2010 to Boxing day 2010

has to be well up there. It was really incredible - I thought the last week of November 1978 was as colder weather as you could exoect in November until the final 10 days of Noevmber 2010 came along.

I wonder if we did a poll on which was the better, the period during December 1981 or late November to Christmas 2010, which one would come out on top?

I wasn't in this country during December 1981 but it did sound amazing.

In 1981, I was only 9 (nearly 10!) so there's all the childhood wonder thing that embellish my memories of it (I got a plastic sledge for Christmas that year - Best. Present. Ever.) Plus, the snow was totally unexpected because, of course, no internet, and I wasn't a slave to BBC weather forecasts either.

But 2010 was remarkable, both for its early onset (although we only had an early taste of snow because we had a day trip to York the last weekend in Nov) and durability. The fact I could watch the forecasts evolving via the charts was great - but saying that, it was a duel-edged sword. Seeing so many places get buried in snow and watching potential snow events IMBY be downgraded to 'near miss' as the time approached was nervy. So much so that I couldn't get too excited until we actually had snow - didn't want another 'dry squib' like 1987... When the snow finally arrived a few days before Xmas, it was relief as much as anything.

Tell you what, though - I always hate to see the thaw set in. I'd love to see an extreme winter event that was so snowy & persistent that even I wanted an end to it!

I'm going to more this to the TV forecasts sub-forum. This sort of archival post should not be lost as it drops off the list, and being in the sub-forum will ensure it is kept for prosperity.

Great videos. I just went through all of them. It reminded me just how exceptional the period was. Impressive.
