Autumn & winter 2014/15

Will the snow show?

The questions about autumn and winter 2014/15 have already started arriving and as usual the most common one is whether we can expect much snow. Last winter one of the press headlines was for 100 days of heavy snow in the UK, but the outcome in much of southern England was a completely snow free winter! Will things be different this time around?

What about the autumn? The first 7 months of 2014 were warmer than average and many forecasts expected this trend to continue through August. The outcome has been very different with some notably cool weather developing. Is this a blip or a trend that will continue as we head through the next few months?

When looking more than a few days ahead in the UK the accuracy of computer weather forecasting models quickly falls, and the role of other factors such as solar activity and trends in recent years is disputed and argued about. Despite this there is a lot of interest in the longer range outlook at this time of year and the Buzz post UK autumn and winter 2014/15 weather, discusses this using very little jargon!
