October 2008 snow in south England - Part 2

October 2008 brought an exceptional early fall of snow to large parts of southern England. Snow depths of several cm were recorded in the Chilterns and even central London woke up to a covering on the 29th October.

Berkhamsted snow scenes

Berkhamsted is a historic market town located in the Bulbourne valley of Hertfordshire, England. The town is surrounded by countryside, much of it in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Due to its elevation of approximately 400 to 600 feet and not being part of the urban heat island of Greater London, snow is more common in this area than in London.

Accumulating snow in central London is quite unusual even in the depths of the winter months. To see it in October is exceptional.

Is it spring, autumn or winter?

The snowfall in central London during October was a truly remarkable weather event. It’s not often that snow accumulates on the ground in London at this time of the year, making this occurrence a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The memory of this event will undoubtedly be cherished for years to come.
