September banker

Posted Wed 23rd August 08:11

As I mentioned in my last update September has in recent years often seemed more like a continuation of the summer than the start of the autumn. Perhaps it's the nearest thing to a "banker" when it comes to the UK's weather.

High pressure ahead?

The school holidays end and summer arrives! It seems Septembers during the last couple of decades have brought more than their fare share of warm anticyclonic periods of weather to the UK. I've not checked the statistics but cool and cyclonic Septembers appear to have been as rare as hens teeth. If you disagree let me know.

This morning's GEFS ensemble suggests that high pressure could be a player in the UK's weather during the first third of this September. It's too early to be confident and I've possibly put the kibosh on things now. Nonetheless a lot of the GEFS members of the postage stamp plot below for September 7th show high pressure having quite a lot of influence on our weather, especially in the south.

Tuesday the 13th September 2016 was the hottest September day for 105 years and the hottest day of 2016. Temperatures at Gravesend in Kent reached 34.4C (93.9F). At the moment I'm not suggesting we'll see anything like that but the chance of some warm and settled periods looks pretty good.

TL;DR

Could September deliver dry and warm periods again this year? Possibly. Some of the medium range computer models are suggesting high pressure will builds towards the south of the UK during the first third of the month. That pattern would follow the climatological trends of recent decades so there's definitely a chance.
