Cool and wet for many

[Updated 08:10 20/07/2017]

All areas have cool and changeable weather in the short term. The longer term picture is mixed but it could become drier and warmer for a time next week.

Thursday starts wet in much of the country but it has turned drier in parts of the west. Through the day showery spells of rain push eastwards and at times they will be heavy. This afternoon brighter skies return to most areas, but rain continues in much of Scotland and the north east.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the far north to 20C (68F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the remnants of the rain slowly clear from the north east. Elsewhere clear spells develop but during the second half of the night wet weather spreads into Northern Ireland and western Britain.

Tomorrow persistent and heavy rain in the west slowly pushes eastwards. Central and eastern areas should remain dry but cloud builds later in the day.

The weekend is looking mixed as an area of low pressure sits over the UK. On Saturday heavy showers affect southern and central regions, with drier and warmer spells more likely in the north. By Sunday there should be fewer showers in the south and temperatures will be up a little.

Buzz investigates the weekend weather woes and looks at the longer term. Our first autumn prospects discussion has been issued.
