Thunderstorms will bring severe weather to parts of the UK today. Cooler air returns in the next 24 hours and the longer term picture is mixed.

Storms have lashed southern Britain overnight and they are continuing in places this morning. Through Wednesday the thundery conditions push northwards. Very heavy rain is expected in Northern Ireland and western Scotland this afternoon. Across England and Wales hot sunny spells develop but more thundery downpours break out.

Temperatures range from 18C (64F) under the cloud in the north west to 29C (84F) in East Anglia and the south east. There is the likelihood of severe weather so check the rainfall and lightning radar for the latest view.

Tonight showery spells of rain push eastwards across England and Wales. In the north west of the UK it turns drier.

Tomorrow will be cooler and fresher. Sunny spells develop but during the second half of the day thicker cloud and wet weather push into the west.

During Friday and the weekend unsettled conditions bring the risk of showers or more persistent outbreaks of rain. Drier and brighter periods are more likely in the south east.
