[Updated 07:00 18/07/2017]

Lightning

Cooler and changeable weather returns to all regions in the next few days. The longer term the picture is mixed.

Tuesday starts dry but there is quite a lot of cloud in southern counties. Through the day widespread sunny spells develop. It will be warm with temperatures ranging from 25C (77F) in Scotland to 28C (82F) in southern England. This afternoon thundery showers push into south western England but elsewhere it remains dry. See the rainfall and lightning radar for the latest.

Tonight thunderstorms push northwards. By the morning they could reach northern England and Northern Ireland.

Tomorrow the thundery rain moves northwards into Scotland. Areas to the south have sunny spells but heavy showers too. Central and eastern England remain very warm but it will be cooler elsewhere.

By Thursday cooler Atlantic air reaches all regions. In Northern Ireland and western Britain wet weather a band of rain pushes in but other areas remain dry.

During Friday and the weekend unsettled conditions bring the risk of showers or more persistent outbreaks of rain. Drier and brighter spells are more likely in the south east.
