It's called rain southerners

[Updated 06:45 11/07/2017]

Heavy rain affects much of the southern half of the UK today. The outlook is changeable in the north but the south should become drier and warmer again.

Tuesday begins with varied weather across the UK, and it is very wet in northern Wales and north western England. Through the day heavy and persistent outbreaks of rain push eastwards across southern and regions. Rain totals of between 10mm and 30mm are expected, so parched gardens will receive a good soaking. Scotland has bright spells and heavy showers, but Northern Ireland should have a fine day.

Under the wet weather in the south it will be cool with temperatures reaching about 18C (64F) in East Anglia at best. Northern Ireland could be the warmest place, possibly sneaking 20C (68F) this afternoon. See the rainfall and lightning radar for the latest.

Tonight drier conditions gradually return from the west, but in central and south eastern England the rain goes on. Northern areas have a mostly dry night with clear periods.

Tomorrow drier and brighter weather returns to all regions. On Thursday scattered showers break out but there will be quite a lot of pleasantly warm sunshine too.

Friday and the weekend bring changeable conditions but southern and central regions should often be fine. It is likely to become very warm in the south again. Buzz looks at the medium term prospects.
