Barbecue weekend likely

A hot weekend is expected in much of the UK and next week could bring more fine weather. Exceptional levels of heat are building in southern Europe.

Thursday begins wet in parts of the north and west. Through the day showers push eastwards across central and northern regions, but the south remains mostly dry. Sunny spells develop but this afternoon thicker cloud builds in the south west.

Temperatures range from 16C (61F) in the north west to 24C (75F) in eastern England. See the rainfall radar and UK weather report map for the latest.

This evening showers clear eastwards in the north. During the second half of the night patchy outbreaks of rain return to the north west and clouds spreads across the west.

Tomorrow the south has warm sunny spells but central and northern areas remain cloudier. Showery rain is likely in the north west. The weekend is set to be fine in much of the UK and the mercury will be soaring. By Sunday temperatures in the south could possibly hit a scorching 32C (90F)! The far north stays more changeable and cooler.

Early next week thundery showers could break out as the warmest air is shunted back into the near continent. Nonetheless a good deal of fine weather is probable and the second half of the week could see a renewed surge of heat as a Spanish Plume sets-up.
