Heavy and persistent rain

[Updated 06:30 17/05/2017]

Rain

Wednesday is off to a wet start in much of southern and eastern England. In the north and west it's mostly dry.

Through the day heavy and at times thundery outbreaks of rain push northeastwards across much of England and Wales. This afternoon the worst conditions slowly pushes into the south eastern corner. In places up to 40mm of rain could fall and there is the potential for surface flooding. Northern and western regions stay mostly dry and it will turn brighter from the northwest.

Temperatures range from 12C (54F) in the north west to a humid 22C (72F) in the south east. See the rain radar for the latest view.

Tonight the heavy rain slowly pulls away northeastwards to leave clearing skies. Northern areas have a chilly night and there could be a touch of frost in the Scottish Glens.

Tomorrow a mix of sunshine and showers is expected. In the north and west showers become heavy and quite frequent, but in the south and east they will be more scattered. Overnight there is a risk of more persistent rain affecting the south eastern corner.

Friday and the weekend remain changeable. All regions have showers which could be prolonged at times but there will be some bright spells too. Buzz looks at today's rainfall.
