Cold and wet today

[Updated 06:50 22/03/2017]

Coastal view

Wednesday starts wet in much of central and northern England. Elsewhere it's a drier picture and in Scotland there has been a widespread frost.

Through the course of the day the bands of rain tend to pivot northeastwards. Wet weather spreads across much of England and Northern Ireland, and over high ground snow is likely. A mix of sunshine and showers follows in from the west during the afternoon. Scotland remains mostly dry and bright.

Maximum temperatures range from about 5C (42F) in Scotland to 10C (52F) in the south. See the radar for the latest view.

Tonight wet weather continues to affect northern and eastern England. Clear skies over Scotland lead to a sharp frost. Icy patches could develop in Wales and western England too.

Tomorrow it remains damp in southern counties. Elsewhere showery bursts of rain ease off to leave a mostly dry afternoon.

During Friday and the weekend high pressure builds over the UK and it becomes mostly dry. The days become milder but nights stay chilly with a risk of frost. The south east could be cooler and cloudier and at times.

Next week high pressure brings a good deal of dry weather. As it slips southeastwards there is a chance of more unsettled conditions returning to the north west. Buzz looks ahead to the next couple of weeks.
