Mixed weekend weather

[Updated 07:15 17/03/2017]

Magnolia

Friday is off to a very wet start in northern and western parts of the UK. Elsewhere it is dry and in the south there are breaks in the cloud.

Through the day the rain in the north slowly edges southeastwards and it will be heavy at times. Colder conditions follow into northern Scotland, but showers develop and over high ground they fall as snow. Eastern and southern England remain dry for most of the day but early brightness is replaced by cloudier skies in the afternoon. It will be windy in central and northern areas.

Temperatures range from a chilly 5C (41F) in northern Scotland to 11C (52F) in East Anglia. See the radar for the latest view.

Tonight outbreaks of rain push southwards but they becomes patchier. Heavy showers affect northern regions.

Tomorrow starts damp in much of the country. Some drier and brighter spells probably develop in the north and east, but despite this the risk of rain remains, especially in the west. During Saturday night another batch of wet weather pushes into the north west, and through Sunday it steadily moves southeastwards, but becomes more fragmented.

Early next week it stays unsettled and it will be chilly in the north. During the middle of the week an area of low pressure sinking southwards may pull in colder air from the northeast, but this isn't certain yet.

Buzz looks ahead to April.

Ensembles at a glance

The 16 day GEFS shows a mixed outlook. All regions have unsettled weather but during the last third of the month the chance of dry periods increases, particularly in the south. Next week it becomes colder.
