The meteorological spring has begun and the TWO long range forecast covering the next three months has been issued. The headline is for a warmer than average season.
In the short term things are chilly. This morning wintry showers are affecting northern regions and in the south west of England there are outbreaks of rain. Elsewhere it is mostly dry.
Through the course of the day persistent outbreaks of rain spread northeastwards across southern counties. This afternoon wet weather affects much of the south, and extends northwards into Wales and central England. Northern areas remain brighter but there will be scattered wintry showers.

Tonight rain pushes into northern England and over high ground it could turn to snow. Drier conditions return to the south but it will be very windy. In Scotland and Northern Ireland clear periods lead to a frost by the morning.
Tomorrow southern counties should be mostly dry and quite mild but elsewhere there will be wintry showers. In central and northern England they could merge to give longer periods of rain and hill snow.
During Friday and the weekend it remains unsettled. Heavy rain is expected in central and southern regions at times with more showery conditions in the north. Central and northern areas remain cold with a risk of snow over high ground. Buzz looks ahead to early March.
The 16 day GEFS show changeable conditions for much of the first half of March. At times it could be cold enough for snow in the north.
