Unsettled and windy

[Updated 08:20 26/02/2017]

Storm damage

Sunday begins with mixed weather across the UK. Outbreaks of rain are affecting north western regions but elsewhere it is dry.

Through the course of the day wet and windy weather steadily pushes southeastwards, but ahead of this it will be dry with bright spells. During the afternoon outbreaks of rain affect much of the country, but central and eastern England should stay dry until the evening. In the north west winds locally reach severe gale force.

Temperatures range from 8C (46F) in Scotland to 11C (52F) in the south west. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight the band of rain continues moving southeastwards with clearer and showery conditions following on behind it. In the north the showers turn wintry as colder air arrives.

Tomorrow morning rain in the south east clears, leaving a mix of sunshine and showers in all regions. It will be colder and the showers are likely to be wintry over high ground, with snow in the north.

Tuesday brings further heavy showers or more persistent spells of rain. In the north the showers will be wintry and even over high ground farther south there is a chance of sleet or wet snow.

Wednesday marks the start of the meteorological spring. Unfortunately it is set to remain unsettled, and during the rest of the week all regions have wet and windy spells. In the north it probably stays cold enough for snow over higher ground but milder air feeds into the southern half of the UK. Buzz looks ahead to early March.

Ensembles at a glance

The 16 day GEFS show unsettled conditions with all regions having showers or longer spells of rain. Colder conditions bring the risk of snow to the north at times.
