Doris brings severe weather

[Updated 09:30 23/02/2017]

Stormy day

Storm Doris is bringing severe weather and disruption to large part of the UK. A wind gust of 94mph has been recorded in Capel Curig, North Wales, and computer models seem to have predicted the storm well.

This morning the area of strongest winds pushes eastwards across North Wales, central England and northern England. Gusts of over 80mph could be recorded locally, with 60mph a possibility farther south towards London and the home counties. A band of persistent rain pushing southeastwards clears quickly, but downpours continue to affect central and northern regions. In an area stretching from the border counties to central Scotland heavy snow will be the main problem, and over high ground 20cm accumulations are possible.

This afternoon winds gradually ease in the west, but remain very strong in central and eastern England where gusts of around 70mph still possible. Further showery spells of rain are likely with snow in the north, but there should be an increasing amount of dry weather.

Temperatures range from 3C (37F) in Scotland to 11C (52F) in the south. See the rainfall radar for the latest view.

Tonight winds continue to ease as Storm Doris pulls away. It will be cold with a frost in sheltered parts of the north.

Tomorrow a much quieter day is in prospect for most of the country but it will feel colder in southern counties. During the afternoon outbreaks of rain return to the north west of the UK and winds strengthen to gale force.

Unsettled weather continues through the weekend and in the north west it becomes very windy again for a time. It will be generally mild. Buzz looks ahead to early March.
