Very mild and mostly dry

[Updated 07:15 17/02/2017]

Despite the cold weather last week the Central England Temperature (CET) for the first half of February was 0.8C above the average. With more mild weather on the way it looks very likely that the CET for all three winter months will be above the average, although January was only marginally over par.

This morning it is mostly dry but there is some rain in the west. Locally in Scotland there has been a touch of frost but elsewhere temperatures are well above freezing point. The rest of Friday brings patchy light rain to the west, but other areas stay dry and some bright spells are likely.

Temperatures range from 9C (48F) in Scotland to 13F (55F) in the south west. See the rainfall and precipitation type radar for the latest view.

Tonight rain becomes more persistent in the north west of the UK and it extends eastwards over much of Scotland. Elsewhere it remains dry.

Tomorrow rain continues to be a risk in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Other areas have dry conditions with the best of the brighter spells in southern counties. It remains mild. Sunday will be similar but the wet weather in the north west should become patchier and more dry spells develop.

Early next week temperatures may rise even further. Monday and Tuesday could be quite warm in southern counties, however late in the week it is expected to turn cold enough for the risk of snow to return to high ground in the north. Buzz investigates.
